Red Lens

We have set of 3 Zeiss CP2 and we would like to add a zoom lens to our package for when making lens changes can't happen. The Red 17-50 or 18-85 are what we are thinking about. Any feed back on one over the other. And how will these match up with our CP2s.

I can't say how they match the CP2s, but if your really can't change lenses, like at live events, you want the longer ranging lens. The 18-85mm is a lot of bang for the buck. At T3 you are probably looking at F2.5 or F2.8. Its one of Red's better valued lenses.

I really like my 18-50mm, useful and sharp... but look out for the weight of the 18-85mm !!! needs support and is very heavy compared to CP2's.

Have anyone you guys by chance bought a Battle Tested lens from Red? Curious of the savings worth it or should I bit the bullet and get the new lens.

I have the 17-50. love it. bummed that when I bought it, it had the huge diamater front, so I had to get a new matte box, then they go and offer smaller diamater lenses that my old box would have fit. go figure. not worth getting it changed out now! what I hear from a lot of people who get the 18-85 is that its a lot bigger than they thought. as mentioned above, support is required. as for battle tested, Doug Jensen mentioned on one of these forums that he got a battle tested 300mm and it checked out great. so I think you will be safe going that route.

If you are still talking about the 18-85mm Red you definitely need a lens support. I got the Duclos.com, but there are others. The rest depends on your matte box and follow focus mainly.
