I just emailed them too asking for pro res HQ and LT options for the primary encoding format. It's fully multi threaded, if you have 1000 cores, it's gonna encode 1000 clips at the same time, 1 clip per core!

I also asked if they could add in a feature where you can do a offline edit with the proxies, export an XML file and re batch right through grinder just what's in your timeline as a finishing move. For laptop editing that would be phenomenal!

If anybody wants it to at least include HQ and LT options, email away!

just looks like a glamorised version of the free software by square5: mpeg streamclip

or am i missing something?

mpeg stream clip isn't as multi threaded as this, plus no timecode insert, no proxies along with ur primaries, and no burn ins. mpeg streamclip will only do max 4 clips at once. If your on a 8 core mac, it's gonna do 8 clips at once. when 12 core macs come out, it's gonna do 12 clips at once. It provides tons more advantages over mpeg streamclip

Grinder does not burn, or give the filename the timecode from time of day on the clip. Which is the best feature of the canon plugin. The "timecode" just starts at 0 or whatever you specify, not time of day. Unless I am missing something?

Well the Canon software is a FCP plugin so only works with FCP. Grinder is a transcoding app that is independent of your NLE. It also uses all the cores available and FCP/ compressor will still only use one pair. It will make simultaneous proxies with a window burn. It will transcode to a different frame rate. It doesn't do anything you can't do with software that is already out but you would need to use more than one piece of software and make more than one pass. Depending on your work flow it will be of not much interest or a HUGE timesaver. It's not something everyone needs but if it works with your workflow then it is definitely something you want. They are a great company and hopefully there enough people out there that find this useful that it will have been worth their while to develop it. When they started on it there wasn't a Canon plugin so the need was more universal. They have talked ,and I'm guessing it will happen, about expanding it to other DSLR's and I'm pretty sure there will be more output options. I wouldn't be surprised if pulling the creation date into the file name is also on the todo list.
I like it a lot and find it very useful. I also have the Canon plugin, MPEG StreamClip, Compressor and a handful of other converters/ transcoders etc. For the Canon, Grinder is my go to app for transcoding.

it's the simple fact that it's multi threaded to the full amount of cores you have that make it appealing to me. with my 8 octo core mac, it can grind away at 8 files at a time. if it can take advantage of hyper threading, that's 16 clips it can encode at once. Mpeg streamclip is 4 clips at once, that's it. When I need to transcode 100 clips, and have a 2-3 day turn over on a cut, and I need to use FCP, both mpeg streamclip, compressor, and e-1 plugin are all gonna eat away at more time than this would. If it can save me time, 50 bucks isn't a lot to ask for. It just needs a few more options and it's a great third party transcoding solution

Not only is Compressor multi threaded but it can use as many Macs as you have on your network to distribute your encoding. Meaning you can create Pro Res, Proxy (even in proxyless cameras), automatic FTP and you tube uploads and E-mail status updates.
