Red Dawn (2012)

Mars? C'mon.

China could have ben plausible, but North Korea makes it laughable at this point.

Well, yes, both are implausible but at least with setting it on Mars, the audience will accept it easier, due to science fiction requiring a certain degree of suspension of disbelief. Also, a setting farther into the future means the socio-political and strategic background can be more flexible in terms of leading up the film's invasion scenario.

I agree that China would have made sense though. If this film had been made 7-10 years ago they probably wouldn't have had to change it to North Korea.

Unless NK army was backed by Martians. :)

I like that. It also offers a fictional explanation as to why North Korea is so shut off from the rest of the world, and why they have nearly no lights. All their power is routed to secret alien military facilities and factories where the populace is forced to work in giant underground plants making weapons for the coming invasion. Also, how do the North Koreans have an EMP bomb? Martian technology.

It also offers sequel possibilities, where once we repel the NK/Martian invaders, the US military gears up and invades NK to fight the remnant Martian army and undercovers all the secret alien infrastructure. The big twist at the end of the sequel is that the Martians anticipated loosing and only wanted to wear us down. Now a massive Martian invasion force is preparing to launch a second invasion. So the plot of the third film follows the Wolverines in a quest to steal a Martian spaceship to get their asses to Mars and blow up the primary launch facility near Cydonia, to stop the next invasion.

The main Martian invasion fleet lies dormant underground for thousands of years waiting for the US to invade North Korea just so they can chase Tom Cruise about some. This pisses off Wolverines Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum so they fly a captured martian spaceship up to the mothership to load a virus that defeats the martians (actually WotW features defeat by virus too - symmetry) because Xen-...I mean Martians just need to learn to leave Tom's thetans alone! After the defeat of the mothership it just hangs there over Johannesburg and the surviving praw--martians form a slum and eat cat food. Man, this thing writes itself! Hang on a minute, what was this thread about again?

Bonus points to anyone who can also work in elements from Prometheus and Dreamcatcher. Maybe one of the Wolverines can be a mentally challenged teen who is really a Martian with psychic powers? Oh, and the Martians are giant bald humanoids who originated life on Earth. Now they want to take over again, after being in suspended animation for thousands of years.

Ah, screw it. Just give the money to James Cameron so he can make an underwater IMAX 3D documentary about the alien lifeforms living in the subsurface oceans of Europa.

The original is anything but sacred, and it made you scoff at times, but it was an interesting take on the Cold War, and had the brat pack at it's height. Plus, you really felt sympathy for Patrick Swayze at the end when he's basically broken down and beaten.

This trailer just makes me cringe. I think the idea of melding John Carter with Battlefield Earth, and having bald martians invading earth, with the only hope of stopping them a telekinetic mentally challenged quadriplegic a better idea. Quick, somebody call Troma!

The original film was an 80s film and 80s films knew what they were. Rarely subtle, never elegant, clever only by accident but they were what they were. There is a naive charm to their lack of sophistication. Let's grab some popular kids and put 'em in a movie saving adults, some current pop music, here's some money, get it in the cinema for summer, where's my cocaine? Sure they still make them this way but now they try to make out like they're not. There's something pure about 80s films. Noughties films and whatever they're calling this decade don't know what they are (and maybe they haven't had 20+ years for nostaglia to kick in...)

Guys, I got it.

Expendables 3.

Have it so that the Expendables get cryogenically frozen for thousands of years and are then thawed to fight on Mars against human created robots that are intent on taking over the whole planet.

This is not good - every time they show a cheesy uber patriot film like that, America engages in an other war soon.

When I came out of "Pearl Habour" (enemies invading US soil), I told my girfriend exactly that, and a few month's later - dang, 911.

Hope I'm wrong this time.

Gonna be a cool flick to watch though, I really liked the first one back then.

Frank

wow, I haven't read something this moronic in awhile. Thousands died and 10 years of war because of a lousy Bay film. kudos.

And Wesley Snipes. Any time Stallone gets frozen, Snipes has to as well. I think it's in his contract or something.

Guys, North Korea even don't have any electricity at night, even the statue in honor of Kim Ir Sen, what invasion you're talking about?

We're good at this. We should be in the movie business. Pass me my cocaine! :)

Martians are green.I hope noone wanted to discuss this film seriously, they might need a new thread :)
This film is getting exactly the discussion it deserves.

Yes Martians are green; those blue things are clearly some sort of Na'vi.

How do the Na'vi fit into the whole Expendables vs Martians thing again?
