Mars? C'mon.
China could have ben plausible, but North Korea makes it laughable at this point.
Well, yes, both are implausible but at least with setting it on Mars, the audience will accept it easier, due to science fiction requiring a certain degree of suspension of disbelief. Also, a setting farther into the future means the socio-political and strategic background can be more flexible in terms of leading up the film's invasion scenario.
I agree that China would have made sense though. If this film had been made 7-10 years ago they probably wouldn't have had to change it to North Korea.
Unless NK army was backed by Martians.![]()
I like that. It also offers a fictional explanation as to why North Korea is so shut off from the rest of the world, and why they have nearly no lights. All their power is routed to secret alien military facilities and factories where the populace is forced to work in giant underground plants making weapons for the coming invasion. Also, how do the North Koreans have an EMP bomb? Martian technology.
It also offers sequel possibilities, where once we repel the NK/Martian invaders, the US military gears up and invades NK to fight the remnant Martian army and undercovers all the secret alien infrastructure. The big twist at the end of the sequel is that the Martians anticipated loosing and only wanted to wear us down. Now a massive Martian invasion force is preparing to launch a second invasion. So the plot of the third film follows the Wolverines in a quest to steal a Martian spaceship to get their asses to Mars and blow up the primary launch facility near Cydonia, to stop the next invasion.
