Red Circle with an "x", error?

I just bought a used DVX100a about a week or so ago, and I've only had a chance to use it a couple of times so far.
Anyhow, tonight I was playing around with it and a little red circle with a white x in it popped up towards the upper left hand corner of the screen. I turned the camera off for a second and after i turned it back on and recorded some more it didn't seem to show up anymore after that. but I'm guessing this is some sort of error message/code?

I haven't received the manual yet, but looked online and couldn't find anything about this little code. So I'm hoping the tech savvy individuals of dvxuser can fill me in on this one.

I was experimenting with different settings in 60i, 24p, and 30p on the same tape. could it have anything to do with that? but I did play the tape back and couldn't see any glitches or anything...

so, what does the little red circle and X mean?...

I'm supposed to go out and shoot some more stuff tomorrow, so I'm hoping this isn't a crucial error that's going to get in the way of things.

Also check what brand of tape you are using in the camera. With the DVX it is better to use Panasonic tape rather than other brands. There are numerous thread here at DVX which can explain the reasons for this but...it's also a possible reason you are experiencing problems apart from buying a camera that may be behind in head cleaning maintenance.

Stick with the same type of tape that the camera has been on before you got it. If you want you can change to sony, but make sure you use a head cleaning tape if you change tape brands. The forums give you input on how to clean your heads, but a good place to start is popping in a head cleaning tape.

thanks guys. i know all about the wet vs. dry tape stock issue. the previous owner had used (supposedly) nothing but the pro grade panasonic tapes. i haven't had time to order those yet, so for the time being i picked up a few of the cheap panasonic tapes from wal-mart to get me by. so ill get the heads cleaned and order some better tapes.

i guess this is one of the reasons why i prefer to buy my equipment brand new. i know exactly what its been through from day one.

It was a used camera. Who knows how long it's been since the heads had been cleaned last?

Also, I've seen this show up on new cameras too. I think there may be some manner of manufacturing residue or something left over; I've seen people get the "red x" on their first tape; they clean the heads and don't see the red "X" again for dozens or hundreds of tapes thereafter.
