Red announces Scarlet to ship in 2011

i stopped following red a long time ago, but of course if the camera bests everything else in it's price range i just might be picking one up. tis the only way for a videographer to keep pace with the environment

You think so, Razz? They've said for a while that Scarlet (interchangeable) would come later. Then again, they have been very busy of late, and delivering on Epic with nary an issue.

Scarlet will be Red's lower priced line of cameras, there could well be more than one model coming on Nov. 3.

I don't think this is realistic. Neither are the possibilities of an increase in resolution, change in sensor size or basically anything that requires major engineering change. RED is consistently late. They seem to be stretched thin on the engineering department. They have too much on their plate and not enough people or maybe the problems are always too hard and take a long time. Even Jannard admits they're inexperienced.

I just can't see them making major changes that affect both hardware and software and then being able to test and validate that everything still works AND GET IT CERTIFIED BY THE FCC in time to ship by end of the year.

Epic sensor in a reduced codec/feature body, I can't see that being that big of an issue. Economies of scale should make it a sensible option anyway.

Piolet - I don't believe Razz was saying that. At least I think?! I got the impression that he was saying because Epic-M and Epic-X are out, and Scarlet fixed will be released in early Nov, and the hold up on Epic-X and Scarlet seemed to be parts from Japan - as Red's assembly line in California is up to speed, that there's a chance Red will announce Scarlet interchangeable at that time, and maybe even Epic-S. All of these have been long past the drawing board and through prototype phases at least to some degree. Numerous bodies of Scarlet (final build, or very close to it) have been in the hands of several people at Red and friends for a few months now. We hear the least about Epic-S - only that it will come last, but considering how similar in body, and modular design these are, I suppose it's possible there could be a more concrete announcement from Red at the time. Because of this I don't see many design or engineering changes at this point in time.

I also have a feeling that behind the scenes Red is working to make it to where when the Dragon chip is available, anyone with a Red camera will be able to be upgraded (not sure about Scarlets though, due to size), and this day may be sooner than expected.

We don't know if Scarlet fixed is the one they are releasing on Nov 3. They have had problems sourcing lens parts for that one since the Japan disaster. There have always been at least two models in the pipeline. The fixed lens version and the interchangeable lens version of the 2/3".
Their core technologies are shared across all cameras so it is not a big leap for them to make substantial changes to a model. They can prototype entire new cameras in less than a month with modern manufacturing technologies. If they could not get parts for the fixed Scarlet design we have seen so far, then it is not unreasonable to expect them to change the design to something they can make without further delays.
Speculation about larger sensor versions is just that. Wishful thinking at this point. But Red's engineering prowess is second to none. They have multiple teams of people developing new technologies and being a small company can turn on dime if something shows promise. We haven't heard any real new details in months. Nov. 3 is going to be interesting, whatever comes of it.

To me the only "change" will be that they will release the interchangeable lens version first. Although I think a switch to S35 it's also possible since epic-s seems to have disappeared from the roadmap and I'm not sure they would go head to head with canon with a smaller sensor.

IMO having the only under $10k 2/3" camera in the market is a very smart move for Red. Or how about a true 4k raw super16mm sized interchangeable version? They could build this on the exact same sensor fab as 2/3" 3k. Either of these are work horse formats suitable for a lot of production styles where 35mm is a positive nuisance.

Agree completely there Razz. There are still a great deal of 2/3" chip cameras in use in television, commercial spots, docs, ENG, and some indie films. "Workhorse" is a very good term. That's exactly where Scarlet is aimed. Not at the DSLR low-budget indies that some people think.

Here's a visual of the type of production that could make use of Scarlet:
