Red announces Scarlet to ship in 2011

I fully agree that there is still a place for 2/3", but the problem is Red has built it's brand around out specing the other guy. If Canon has indeed caught up & will be offering large sensor 4k for sub $20K then I can't see Red putting a 2/3 incher out there due to their bravado & pride.

I'll go one step further & speculate that the fixed lens Scarlet is no longer. I have nothing to base that on other than the problems they were having sourcing parts after the tsunami. I keep thinking there will be one $12Kish scarlet brain with a mount that will accept Red branded interchangeable lenses that act like traditional ENG video lenses (the idea behind the fixed Scarlet anyway) and will also adapt to cinema/still lenses.

I think that after the success of Epic that Red is less inclined to play in the sub $10K market. I'd love to be wrong & 3K for $3K to be alive and kicking but I just don't see it.

To quote Jim Jannard
I think you can assume it applies to everything we have in the works. Our competition has responded to where they think we are going. That changed a long time ago. :-)

Pretty sure the fixed lens Scarlett is very much alive and will ship soon after the Nov 3 announcement. What the final price will be is anyones guess at the moment.

Just taking a wild guess at a vague announcement. I wish we could get Vegas odds on these things, I'd drop a $20 on fixed not making it to market. Sure it's a long shot but they're hinting at major changes.

Jim Jannard:
There are some monumental changes coming...

Canon's newest camera, the XF300, is around $6500. It's a very nice 1/3" camcorder. Right on par with the 5 year old Sony EX-1. I find it hard to believe that Canon will announce a newer, far superior camera, that will be anywhere near that price range. The Scarlet, while subject to change, is expected to fall in the $5-6000 range, and should out spec the canon offering by a mile and a half. I'm a long time Canon user, so I'm used to Canon underwhelming me with their new releases. I just keep hearing that the Canon will be a good choice for those that can't afford the Scarlet, I think it's going to be the other way around. Just a guess of course.

I'm sure Canon has already decided what they will leave out of this model so they can "update" it with a newer version. I might be a little bitter today, I've been editing out of focus pics from my 5d and 5dII. :)

I don't know why it's so hard to believe Canon might release a big chip camera around the XF300's price, especially when the cameras have two completely different uses. We'll see what happens.

So far the rumors have suggested it will be more in the F3 price range. Around $15k.

November 3rd will be a day of great surprises!

I am stocking up on beer and pretzels now. That should be a fun day. Who do you think is gonna have the best log blogging of the Canon event?

Homer: Mmmmm... beer... He goes to the fridge, removes the can, and opens it. Bart emerges from his hiding place and announces, ``April F---!'' Before he can finish his sentence, the roof of the house explodes. Eddie: That sounded like an explosion at the old Simpson place. Wiggum: Forget it. That's two blocks away. Eddie: Looks like there's beer coming out of the chimney! Wiggum: [gets out of the car] I am proceeding on foot. Call in a Code 8. Eddie: [into radio] We need pretzels. Repeat, pretzels.

"Head to head." Jim

No way Scarlet is gonna have a 2/3 sensor. We know for sure the Canon is gonna be at least S35.

I would love to be proven wrong. I'm pulling for Canon here, but I'm fairly familiar with their track record. Remember the interchangeable lens XLH1 retailed for $9000. Either way I'm excited for the announcements.
