Red announces Scarlet to ship in 2011

FWIW I think they are just announcing the ship date on Nov. 3rd, not that it's shipping then, probably shipping December at some point, hopefully I'm wrong. Also, really hoping for S35 sensor and not 2/3", I'm much bigger fan of S35; guess we'll see on Nov 3rd

If the Scarlet ships with a 2/3 sensor it's not a bazooka it's a pocket knife.

This knee jerk reaction from RED tells us Canon has something very cool to announce on Nov 3rd.

They'd been getting a lot of flack from REDusers surrounding the Scarlet and lack of information. I think they felt it was a good idea to release something to calm the waters.
Well, no, it doesn't work that way according to the new policy. Red has said that not only will they release details on November 3, but Scarlet would start shipping before the end of the year. So it's not just throwing REDusers a bone.

Purely just speculation, but maybe it refers to products after the already announced lineup. I know someone's going to go over to REDuser and find the exact post where Jannard said "starting...NOW" or whatever, but in all seriousness guys, does it even matter? This announcement was a good one for people - who cares if it doesn't fit with their "new policy"?

could be... will have to wait and see... but, Jim did say in the nov 3rd thread: "when we announce the changes, we will be ready to ship."

we're upgrading the reduser servers for this... whatever it is... so, i don't think they are ****ing around... like they said though "they announce, we announce, best wins" or something to that effect. will see what the masses think come nov 3rd :)

You're actually upgrading the servers, for real? Wow - I thought that was just a joke.

Just to reiterate - this isn't the announcement of announcement...

It's the announcement of the ship date along with product information.

Jannard - "When we announce the changes, we will be ready to ship."

And I'm constantly blown away by how much people dont understand the need for a good 2/3" camera. S35 is good for a lot. But there are many places proper S16 or 2/3" would be just as nice if not better.

no joke. and, to be clear, i know absolutely nothing about what is coming, and i am not trying to hint that i do....

servers have been needing an upgrade on reduser for a while now, so could be that simple. but, i don't think they are messing around...

well, the thing is, I think there have been very nice 2/3" cameras in the market for a long time, but what we don't have yet is a S35 (or bigger) camera without big issues (image quality, build quality, ergonomics, etc) for a price not much higher than we've become accustomed to in the DSLR years - and that's the gap people still want someone to fill

I'm with you on this one.

Jannard has said many times that 4K (minimum) is the way to go. All their cameras are geared towards professionals. So anything less than 4K for the Scarlet would be contradictory.

I'm not saying that 2/3" isn't highly useful for many things such as docs, TV shows, etc. etc. But the point is that a 3K camera from Red seems like it should be competing with the other camera's moving forward which are for the most S35 sensors. Seems like 2/3" is moving backwards, but that may just be my feeling on it and maybe there are plenty of shooters looking for a 2/3 camera, then again I would think many interested in a 2/3" camera might not be interested in the form factor and ergonomics of the Scarlet. I think their original plan of having a 2/3" version and an S35 was a good one, and a profitable one, providing it didn't take a lot of put different sensors in the same style body.

2/3" sensor might not happen anymore, since the camera's probably changed quite a bit. Maybe it's similar to the APS-C sensors around these days.

I'm with you on this... 2/3" is great and very flexible. If 2/3" is scrapped, Ikono will be getting my cash (they may do anyway, such a sexy cam)

I'm inclined to believe that Scarlet fixed will be either true 4K or QuadHD (aka 4k for Sony, JVC...). If it turns out to be S16 instead of 2/3", even better. Like many others, I would love to have a great s16 camera for movie making.

To me it doesn't exist until it ships. Not just Red, but any company, in any market. These announcements of announcements are nothing more or less than FUD designed to get you to hold off on a purchase because "something better is just around the corner" which has always been true, and always will be true. Don't let companies do this to you!

The only way to deal with the technology markets (from computers to cameras to cars to whatever) is to buy the biggest bang for your buck when you have to buy. Your needs, and only your needs, dictate your time table. Otherwise, people who needed a camera five years ago would still be waiting on a Scarlet... Just sayin' life is too damn short to wait on Red to get its act together.

there's a huge market for 2/3 sensors, s35 dof is not ideal for everything

Right now in the under $10k prosumer market you have choice of 1/3" or 1/2" cameras with good feature sets for solo operator convenience and 4/3-35mm large sensor cameras with interchangeable lenses with poor features for solo operators in run and gun situations lacking suitable fast constant speed servo zooms. 2/3" EFP/ENG cameras with practical general purpose solo operator functionality start at F3 price ranges. Scarlet 2/3" would fill a big hole in the under $10k market for those of us who want both a broad range of creative flexibility and compact professional solo run and gun convenience. It is the only 16mm sized cam in a world of super8 and 35mm sized choices.
