RED and Atomos Ink a Licensing Agreement/Partnership

I'm mostly curious to see what this means practically - is Atomos looking for codecs and techniques of recording 8k RAW?

My intuition tells me that this is really about large on set monitors like the Sumo and their capacity to process R3D files. This may mean producing products for RED directly or simply becoming 3rd party compatible. If spitting out proxies can be done by the monitor rather than in camera or by a computer it is helpful. Remember most Atomos products only do Prores 422 HQ. I also think that Atomos went to the stock market because they already had this kind of relationship in mind. They are going to double their line in the next couple of years and are trying to break into the next level of film production beyond being a support accessory company for DSLR owners.

Just another thought. Wouldn't it be interesting if they decided to do a Teradek/SmallHD Bolt equivalent ? That's the kind of thing I would be thinking about. Vitec should be looking at Atomos too. But Jeremy looks pretty independently minded, which may explain his stock market move as well.

My thoughts exactly. I wonder if RED's new Ultra Brite monitor is a repackaged Atomos monitor.

With Vitec acquiring Amimon, who have a monopoly on the wireless chipsets, probably less likely to see this sort of thing in the future from other companies unfortunately.

It's all really an interesting development because the Apple and RED relationship took everyone by surprise, and many were also very surprised ProRes RAW was announced with the Atomos being able to record it (even though it wasn't very clear at the time how and from who). Someone on here even wondered if RED would care and I actually responded they probably don't care, but maybe they did!

Apple: "We're introducing ProRes RAW soon."
RED: "No."
Atomos: "Cool, we'll record it."
RED: "No, you won't."
Apple: "Let them record ProRes RAW and we'll sell your Raven. Trust us, everyone will go to the Apple store to buy a $15K cinema camera."
RED: "Fine, but we want better monitors."
Atomos: "Done."
Blackmagic: "Bite me."

Totally making this up.

You mean that's not the exact transcript from the apple/red/atomos meeting!?

That RED logo ain't cheap to make you know? ;-) At least they didn't plaster the stupid skull on the front. Easily my most hated logo in all of video/cine gear. It's like a cine camera by Ed Hardy.

+1
That was the summit of frathouse fanboy culture. Might as well have put a barbed wire arm tattoo around the camera as well.

I’m actually surprised that they didn’t do a special Ed Hardy edition RED camera.

Hell, this is the same company that has a page on their message board for people to list their camera serial numbers and what they name it.
