Recovering Footage From A Formatted SD Card

Hey guys,

I had a peruse of the archives and can't find a thorough solution to this issue. I am trying to recover some personal footage from a Sandisk 32GB SD card that was formatted in-camera with the AF100. I scanned the card using the card recovery tool by LC-TECH RESCUE PRO, and it found nothing. I read somewhere that formatting in-camera actually lays a series of zeros over the card so that the data is not recoverable.

I'm reaching out for some advice in case any of you have had to deal with this issue in the past and if there is a solid solution.

Thanks

Zachary

Had complete success recovering from re-formatted cards using the Panasonic programs available on their web site, if not on the disk that comes with the Camera. - can't remember which either AVCAM Restore or AVCAM Recovery.

Fortunately didn't Re-Format the Card in error, just ran the whole thing as a test (seeing if it would work just in case), several times - recorded footage, re-formatted the card, checked to see the camera showed an empty card, then put the card in my imac - making sure it's record lock on the card is on - and managed complete recovery every time.

Footage shot on an AF100 can definitely be recovered from a card reformatted with the AF100 with one of the above programs, provided no new footage has been recorded on it, and it has not been put into a mac without the record lock on.

Cards shot in HMC 150's etc., or re-formatted in HMC 150's don't seem to be recoverable - at least not with that software.

Hi Halberd,

Formatting SD card will never erase the stored data and it will not even overwrite with series of zeros. Only the pointer which points to the stored location of files will be removed and space marked as available but the actual data still resides on the stored sector until it is overwritten with new data. Such data can be recovered with the help of recovery utility.

In case if you have not used SD card after formatting you can retrieve your lost data. Simple download the trial version of some good recovery utility and try. If you are able to view the files you need then use it recover.

Good Luck
