Recovering Deleted P2 Files?

Hello,

I accidently deleted 2 folders of P2 content from a hard drive using backup software. I purchased Stellar Phoenix recovery software which scanned the drive and sees the two folders of P2 content. When it recovers the files it creates all the similar file structure, however it creates document.MXF files and not the Unix Executable.MXF files that can be opened in Log and Transfer.

The files are still on the drive, they have just been deleted from the file directory structure. Does any have any experience with this that can help me out?

Thanks, Drew Harty

Are the files all there, just not in the right folders? I don't know exactly what to tell you, other than the tiniest files will be the XML files probably, which go in the CLIP director; and then the next-tiniest will be the BMP file which goes in the ICON directory, and the biggest files will be the VIDEO files, and there will be a whole bunch of medium-sized files which go in the AUDIO directory.

You can figure out which is which by installing P2CMS on your system, and then dragging the MXF files into the timeline in your NLE (P2CMS adds an MXF import component that lets Apple's NLEs see MXF files directly).

Once the recovery software scans the drive, you can see all the files in the proper folders. The problems is, as I understand it, because the files have been deleted from the HD directory, the computer no longer sees the files, so I expect P2CMS won't see them either.

The recovery software somehow reconstitutes the files to another drive, which it did with the proper folder structure but not file type: it created .MXF as document files and not the Unix Executable file. Result is Log and Transfer doesn't recognize them.

I will try downloading P2CMS to see if it recognizes the files.

Thanks, Drew Harty

I tried using P2CMS, but it also can't open the files. The XML and BMP files are there and in the proper folders, as are the audio and video files. When I click on a video or audio file it shows the proper name (0001LZ.MXF, for instanace) but under file Kind it says Document, though the files size is clearly that of a video file.

Feels like so close, but out of reach.

Drag 'em into the timeline on a Windows system and see if they work there. Any Windows NLE can take the individual MXF files without needing the folder structure. So that will at least tell you if the stuff is there and usable.

recover software should help you out. I dont know whare to look though. Id o know a file is not really gone untill you write something else on that spot on the drive.
