Recording to separate channels on the DVX100b

My apologies if this is a simple question, but here goes...

I've read suggestions here that seem to imply that when you record to both channels on the DVX you can set the gain on one channel a little lower than the other to give you a bit of a safety net in case of clipping.

My question is...I have in the past recorded audio directly on the DVX using both channels, but when captured...it's all still one audio file as far as I can see. I don't see how one would separate the channels in order to take advantage of the above tip.

I feel I must be missing something really obvious, but I've searched the forums and can't figure out what. If it matters, I'm using Premiere to capture.

I'd appreciate a kick in the right direction.

Thanks.

Look at your captured audio track, it should have a left and right channel corresponding to your two microphones. I do not know about Premiere for audio processing, but programs like Audacity can split the channels into two mono tracks for further processing. I know in Premiere Express you can apply audio effects such as channel volume or duplicate the audio track and do a fill left on one and fill right on the other to work with two mono tracks. Good luck.

In Premiere 6.0, on the audio channel on the timeline, there is an option -- a small blue button (next to the small red one.) The red button is selected by default -- this turns on the 'rubber bands' option, for adjust the audio clip's volume. However, if you click the blue button instead, you get the left/right channel adjustment option.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the help guys! I guess in my head I was expecting a totally different track...it didn't occur to me that it would be recorded onto left and right, but that makes sense now!

Thanks a lot!
