Recording to powerbook

I know this has been covered like a blanket, but I am looking for step by step workflow for recording to external drive through powerbook. Do I need to go through FCP. I have tried through FCP and I get dropped frame issues. Any finger pointing to proper setups would be grateful.

I was recording to a usb 2 hard drive through FCP.

thanks

You'll want to use Firewire (preferably Firewire 1394b) as it transfers at the highest rate.

There are some tutorials on the web but I've forgotten where.
But basically you'll need a 4-pin to 6-pin to go from your camera to your laptop.
Then you could use an 8-pin to 8-pin to go from your laptop to your external harddrive (assuming it is Firewire 800).

But the problem is that the Firewire 400 and 800 ports are on the same bus on the laptop, which means that it can really only go at the slower speed (400).

If you want to ensure a smooth capturing, you should buy a PCMCIA Firewire card to put it on a separate bus.

Sorry if that's confusing, but I hope it helps a little.
