Recording to a firewire harddrive

Can you by-pass the tape and just record to a firewire hard-drive with the dvx100a? has anybody done this? Thanks!

You can do this using a computer. But you can't use an external hard drive hooked directly to the DVX. Unless it's a Firestore or something made specifically for this purpose.
 
Just to clarify, with something like a FS, nNovia QC, or DV Rack, you can record w/o tape, but you have to control stop/start from the device, not the camera.
