Recording timecode

I normally record timecode on new tapes in vcr mode. Manual is confusing on proper procedure for DVX. All thoughts greatly appreciated.

I generaly do it in camera whilst filming, if you rewind to review your take, make sure to use end search to pick up where the timecode left off, this is pretty fool proof and another way of not even touching a tape that is rolling is using a second fire wire device as a 'video village playback' some of us have a Panny GS-15 or equivelent that does work as a deck well on set.

I've been shooting a job this week with my new DX100A and I'm on tape/hour 21.

My assistant couldn't make the last few days and a new fellow was helping out with the logging and timecodes. Somehow the display now says UB for user bit instead of the previous TC for the timecode.

How could this happen and how can I change it back? Will it affect the timecode in post? Thanks.

Jaun - just going from memory as I'm out of town away from my camera but I'll give it a shot.

First - don't bother "striping" tapes in VCR mode because when you start shooting you are going to automatically re-lay new timecode. If you understand the difference between an insert edit and an assemble edit... when you are shooting you are doing an assemble edit. It records video, audio, and TC all at once.
Besides all that you are doubling the head wear time on your camera.......

Now for the settings:
In the menu go to where you set the timecode
Set to PRESET
set TC to time of your choice to start recording. I personally start at hour 1
Set TC to 00:59:30:00 and record about 35 seconds of bars which will bring you up to 00:01:05:00
Now back the tape up to around 00:01:00:00
Go back to menu settings and change TC setting to REGEN. REGEN=Regenerate - it will now pick up the TC where the tape is located, ie - 00:01:00:00

It sounds like a bunch of steps but after you've done it a few times it becomes second nature....

Are you talking about the display on the LCD? If so, it will not effect the TC.

Thanks all for your input. The manual just seemed a little gray in this area, as it did on other areas...

Sirius, Can you suggest a site for purchasing those cleaning supplies I read about in an earlier post? Sorry, didnt't have time to read ALL the posts on that thread...

Ashokan1,
I think you can get back your original settings in the menus...

Thanks again,
Juan-two-three...

Yes, on the display it reads UB before the timecode. Previously it read TC before the timecode. This was before the assistant loaded a new tape and played with the settings.

I figured it was still recording the TC and the display simply read UB but thanks for the feedback Sirius. I'll sleep a little better tonight.

Now what does it all mean? Why would I prefer the display to read either UB or TC? Should I be able to set it back to TC but how can I do that?

I tried a few times by setting the UB settings to TC but with no success. I'm probably missing something very simple here.

Thanks.
