Recording timecode with DVRack HD

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to record timecode with ONLY the DVR (digital video recorder) in DVRack HD? I was able to record timecode only when a P2 Card was inserted (I set the camera to make a back up recording via 1394 into DVRack), but the timecode generated is completely out of order. So, this method isn't going to work (unless I'm doing something wrong).

I've searched the forum for some answers, but there doesn't seem to be very much info on it. Anyone have suggestions?:dankk2:

bump. Good question, I think I understand, do not know answer.

Something that comes to mind, if shooting 24frame mode, the feed from the HVX to DV Rack is on the fly doing the pull down/pull up? (dropping the repeat frames), thus the Timecode from say a 29.97 base is being messed up with the 23.976p file encoded to the drive? Am I way off with my thought?

Also, I have been meaning to explore how TC in DV Rack can be manipulated, mode changed, free run, etc.

Hi Christopher Barry,

The problem I'm having is that the timecode/ shot clock in DVRack doesn't continue from where it left off. It actually starts over again from 00:00:00:00.

When I use the other method, setting the camera to record to both P2 and a back up unit (i.e., DVRack), the timecode is inconsistent such that the next clip's TC will actually start at a number that the previous clip has already covered. Am I making sense? If not, it's because the TC doesn't make sense to me!

What do you do for timecode?

I run DV Rack. I have no P2 cards yet, as I record 1080p and waiting for the CinePorter and at least a 16gig P2 card before I buy one.

I have notice that when DV Rack records (no P2 in HVX), it does not continue on from the TC end point of the last clip. I forgot exact details, it starts at 00:00:00:00 TC for each clip or free runs? This concerns me, especially with long form narrative work coming up. For short form work and general footage acquisition, TC is not going to bother me. For a narrative project scheduled later in the year, plan is records to P2 cards and/or CinePorter. Retaining the MXF format and 4 audio channels will be ideal for subsequent loading into a number of different NLE options.

Maybe this TC issue is a good question to post in the Serious Magic Forum?:)

EDIT: If you can log into SM Forum, this old post is on track with your theory, however, refers to recording to tape, not P2. If you can have next clip TC start from last clips end, problem mostly solved. When TC completes and starts at 00:00:00:00 again, you would change file name, so the TC and name create a unique file, whilst having TC numeric used already, thus equivalent to another logged tape. Not sure if DV Rack allows this TC start, stop, continue, without P2 card recording at same?
