Recording Time and a Mystery

Some what baffled. Settings are HQ 1920/30P. Filled a SxS 16 gig card and got roughly an hour of footage as advertised. My next card - a 32 gig SxS-1 showed a recording time of 115 minutes. When the card was completely full and downloaded to the computer I only had 90 or so minutes leaving a difference/shortage of 25 minutes. Also I noticed that occasionally i would be missing a clip numerically. Which is to say I have clip ----15 then ----17 missing clip ----16. However i definitely have all that I shot. I assigned one button to perform delete last clip and I do use it - nice- but perhaps using it say a 15-20 times or so I'm only missing say 6 numeric clips. I somehow don't feel this is linked to this issue. Is this normal? I suspect using VBR accounts for the less recording time - true? But then the 16 gig card didn't lose any time. And about the clip count missing a number from time to time. Could someone unmask this for me?

This certainly can't be one of life's little mysteries - can it?

I don't know about the time difference, but regarding clip order, I've had that happen to me now and then on a really long clip it puts it as the last clip on the card although that's not the order I shot it.

The first time that happened I just about had to kill myself. I shot a wedding and all the clips came out great.... the greetings, the seating, then the next clip was everyone getting up and leaving. WHAT? I thought for sure I somehow got pause/record mixed up and actually had it on pause the entire wedding. For about 1/2 I was freaking out. How do you tell someone you didn't actually record the ceremony? Well, through near tears I found the clip, it was somehow labeled differently (I forget how so) and it was the last clip on the card. It was about 20-30 minutes long. I've had that happen once before on a long clip. Scare the FLIP out of me. But the relief of finding it there was almost worth the pain, ha ha!

Wow Buck my heart would have been pounding if the ceremony was missing on one of my cards! That's a wedding videographers worst nightmare...

Hey Buck - really appreciate your input. Talk about pure panic. While you were searching for the ceremony I can see the possibility of considering a new career as a travel agent working from somewhere in Argentina.

Yes it works but every once in awhile....

I've got the same problem with 32gig cards - did anyone solve this? It starts with 117min remain, but only records 90min In the PC the card only has 25gb used but camera says its full. I did test the card by dumping some files on it while in the PC and it can be filled up to 32gb.

I know what you mean re the different file names, this happens with big files that Sony Clip broser has to stich together, it basically gives the big file a new name.

Cheers
Les

I typically on an empty 32 gig SxS, get a reading of 116 minutes on 720p30 in HQ. It's odd how different people's cameras read different times when the card is empty. I haven't noticed if I get less time than advertised though. I do get oddly named files on long takes.

Maybe if there is a lot of movement in your footage, it takes more space to deal with it? If you are not moving the camera, it doesn't have to keep writing the same frames over as intensely because they look the same as the one before them? Just guessing.
