Recording straight to hard drive.

If I understand the system correctly, you can get a laptop with Adobe Onsite, then record directly to the hard drive, and skip the tape?

Can you easily ad an external hard drive to the laptop? And then, plug in the external lap top to your desktop for editing?

Is there something else besides Adobe Onsite that does the same thing?

Yes, you can do all of that, easily.

Most NLEs will allow direct capture from a camera, too. The DVX should be supported by pretty much all of the NLEs.

Yes you can easily do this. Adobe OnLocation can be used, and you can use an external USB or firewire hard disk, and then plug that hard drive directly into your editing station.

There are many other types of programs that can do this also, and most NLE programs have the ability to do live capture as well.

For example you can use FCP to do this if you set the capture setting to "Non-controllable Device" And when you click capture now it will start the recording. I have used this method in the past but I prefer a purpose made program just because you have so many more options/features and this allows you to use other programs at the same time too. Which you cannot really do when using FCP this way because it goes into that "preview mode" type thingy like when you capture from tape.
