Recording out firewire into this?

Can I do it and avoid the capture process? Meaning, can I then take this and plug it into my MacPro and have the files just sitting there. And if so, what format would they be in?

I may be shooting auditions and the camera would be locked off for 6+ hours and I would really like to avoid the capturing process to then burn the auditions to a DVD. I don't have a laptop and it's not worth it to me to get a Firestore. If a cheap HDD would work that would rock.

You can do what you want with a laptop, or with a firestore, but you cannot do it without using at least one of those.

Hmmm... I have a 5 year old Dell laptop sitting around. Any freeware programs that will let me record the DV stream?
