Recording on the fly with a DVD recorder

Hi,
I'm trying to make some money recording some music recitals at school, and I want to know what you guys think of recording footage straight to a dvd recorder. First of all, "Is this Possible?" I would really love to connect an external dvd recorder to record the footage straight to dvd rather then having to make a dvd via digitizing to a computer. I only assume this will help me save money, because I wouldn't have to spend money for a new tape for each recital. I know the panasonic allows a person to attach an external component, "does this include a dvd recorder?" I would only assume that I could feed the AUDIO AND VIDEO to the recorder and then have the external dvd recorder capture the footage. What are the advantages and disadvantages of such a setup. If anyone knows if this will work, or if it is practical, please write back.

You should be able to do that, but the quality will suffer, not to mention the hassle of carrying around a DVD recorder.

You aren't interested in doing any editing? Just straight recording and handing over the raw DVD?

Yes it will work as David has said.

For something like a music recital, it may be a very good idea, there's no favouring one student over another with extra screen time that way.

Sometimes editing isn't needed.

Thanks for the replies guys. Yes, I want to do little to no editing. I just want a finished product to hand to them at the end of their recitals.

Just two more things....since I have already experimented with this.

See if u can get a DVD recorder with an inbuilt hard drive. this way you can load ur data on the hard drive, and than later edit it (to the extent of removing unwanted takes...or chanign the order in which you ultimately burn the clips).

Second, some of the dvd recorders have both a DV in&out port...so u keep the possibiolity of transferring the data later anywhere...if u wanted.

enjoy
