Recording off a tv?

I am trying to get some footage from my friends super 8 camera onto my computer. They can get their video playing on a tv so I was wondering what I had to do to hook up my GH3 to the tv to record this footage?

I presume you are refering to 'hi-8' video... as opposed to super 8mm film... In any case anything that is displayable via a analog TV and tape, should be digitized by a digitizer, rather than shooting from the screen...

Isn't there some sort of TV sync 'magic' mode option? Which if available may mitigate TV 'roll' or bright band/bars in the resulting captured image.

No good ever came from trying to tape a video screen. Get a capture device for your PC or Mac, such as analog to DV like a Grass Valley ADVC unit. Or on a tight budget, there are USB devices that convert analog video to H.264 or MPEG, etc. (quality varies, get what you pay for).

As j1clark said, it seems you're referring to Hi8mm video, not Super8mm fim.

The challenge here is that your GH3 does not have the ability to record from an external video source. What you need is a DV bridge. There are several ways to do this.

1) BUY ONE, and connect your Hi8 deck or camcorder to capture directly to your computer. USB-based bridges are great for Windows, not so much for Mac for which you'll need a FireWire-based device at the very least (or Thuderbolt).

2) Borrow (if you can find one) a Digital8 camcorder with FireWire if you're on a Mac (or you have a PC with FireWire connectivity). Digital8 was the digital version of Hi8. HOWEVER, you'll need to research the specific model of camcorder and make sure that it is backwards-compatible with analog Hi8. Not all Digital8 cameras were.

3) Borrow a miniDV camcorder, and use it as a DV bridge. These camcorders (most of them, anyway) were able to record external A/V sources. Just make sure the correct cable is included. Also, insert a fresh, blank miniDV if you like and record a digital archive tape of the footage. It'll be easier to go back to that later than to have to go through the whole analog rigamoroll again later.

For what it's worth we've always had this problem in the uk. Import duty on video cameras is less than video recorders - been line this for years so video cameras have recording inhibited in UK models. Damn annoying. I use a faulty dv recorder ex eBay to get composite and y/c into my computer.
