Recording into the camera VCR mode

I am currently in the middle of making a dub for a client. I am using my Sony GVD 1000 as the player and my camera as the record deck. The person that shot the footage was not monitoring his audio on his DVX100B camera and there are sections where the audio is horrible and unusable. On the GVD 1000 deck you can select Channel 1 or 2 or Stereo. I tried to turn off the channel with the bad audio but it was still coming through on the camera. I heard no audio from the deck but heard it coming from the camera if that makes sense!

Now if I had the GVD1000 going through a mixer then have the mixer go to the camera would I be able to pot down the channel I don't want? The GVD has no such audio controls to pot down. I can only select channel 1 or 2 but the person shooting the footage had his audio on both channels it seems for some parts of the tape and other parts his audio was on 1 channel.

The bottom line is this stuff is a HOT MESS and to think this footage is of some well known celebrities and interviews with them...I am glad its not me that has to explain why the audio sounds like crap!

I dont know, all that hurts my head. But you should be able to capture the video and then select the audio channels in your NLE, no? Then you can take the best channel and boost it a bit and maybe sprinkle in some compression which should raise the levels while keeping the noise down....not to mention noise reduction. I'd bet you can make that audio sound a lot sweeter than you think with the right post tweaks.

Yea well like I said I was just making dubs. I am not trying to get all fancy importing the footage into my FCP system although I DO see your point and maybe if the person paid me money for the hassle then I would consider it.

If you're dubbing firewire to firewire, no you can't change anything. If you dub analog (i.e., output via s-video) then you could do what you're asking.

o ok thanks Barry! I will do it that way next time although I hope next time the shooter is wearing HEADPHONES and monitors his audio so I won't have to deal with the issue I had to deal with! LOL!
