Recording from Firewire

Hello guys,
Does anyone know if the HVX200 will output 1080p video to Firewire?

This cam seems great but I hate the P2 cards concept... using an app like DVRack (http://www.dvrack.com) to record the video directly to a laptop would be great.

Bye!

DVRack as it is today will not support the output of the HVX.
I'm sure they are working to have a compatible version by the time the camera is released.

..i find it odd that anyone would hat eth concept of P2 rather than simply not be able to afford it or not understand it, but if you want to output through firewire to an 3rd party app for direct to disck reocrding you can. DV rack does not currently support DVCPRO-HD but they will soon enough. but if you can edit DVCPRO-HD you could just capture to your NLE as well if its not available through a new DVrack version at the HVX's release

DVRack will support the output - I emailed them and they told me they will. Don't know when but chances are that they will include it in the upcoming HDV plugin release.

Iamloser, nice point. Actually I don't "hate" the P2 concept per se. I love the idea and the workflow - But $900-1700 for few minutes of video is unacceptable (for me at least). If the camera will really output the HD video trough firewire then I don't understand what's exactly the problem, unless someone is going to use the camera for fast point-and-shoot videos.

but its not 900-2000 for a few minutes of video.. its 900-200 for a card that holds a few min of video at a time.. you can dump at apx 460mbps from the card straight to a usb2.0 HDD plugged into the cam after each take, and store as much as the HDD will hold.. your only limited to a couple minutes PER SHOT/TAKE (for now). and thats if you only have one card.. and if you have multiple cards you could just keep swapping and dumping to HDD if you wanted.. once the cards get bigger in capacity i dont think anyone will be worried about it as much though when you can shoot for 30min+ on one card.

however i do understand that nobody..myslef included wants to be limited in the shot time dept. but it doesnt really discount the useability of P2.. it only means its not as effiecient now as it will be a few years from now. as deffered to buying DVCPRO-HD tape its a miracle though. even if i can only shoot for 4minutes in one take.. ive never shot a take that long in my life. but im not an event guy.. event people will have to go with a firestore till p2 ups in capacity
...anyhow i do understand where your concerns are coming from. :)

Thi

I doubt it will output 1920x1080P24 over firewire. The DVCProHD codec will output 720p over firewire 400. If DVCProHD compressed 1920x1080p24 at 5:1 it might be possible with firewire 800. I have a firewire 800 card with about 1TB of removable storage but I haven't hooked it up yet...

The firewire port of the HVX will stream a DVCPRO-HD 100-megabit signal. So you will get 1080/24p, 1080/30p, 1080/60i, or 720/60p out of the firewire.

720@60P is exactly the same data rate as 1080@24P... 100Mb (13MB) per second. This will easily pass through either Firewire 400 or USB 2.0. So don't get upset, this is proven technology that works TODAY!

Ok, now I want this camera

I just wonder what kind of configuration is required to edit smoothly in NLEs

Just look at FCP-HD or Avid Express HD and look at their minimum requirements. Apple was demonstrating multiple streams of DVCPRO-HD in real time. I didn't look at the booth, but someone told me that on the fastest mac they had 12 streams playing, simultaneously, in real time.

They accomplished that by using the Centravision shared file system over fiber channel [not firewire]. Really cool, plenty of bandwidth, with plenty of expense. Probably not the solution most of the people who are price sensitive over the cost of P2 media would choose. Plus if you wanted to work in a heterogeneous shared environment using PC’s would be easier and much less expensive. This isn’t a Mac vs. PC thing, the file system Apple used to demonstrate the 12 streams in real time, what I believe they call Xserve, is actually owned by ADIC and has been in production facilities for the past five or more years. You can get a lot more storage with a lot more bandwidth if it you don’t buy the Apple re-branded products.
