Recording from DVD (URGENT ASAP)

I am having a big family reunion and have been using my DVX to record various VHS footage onto DV and loading it into my G5 to edit. No problem there. I decided I wanted to add some footage from various movies to my tape for my family. Both the Samsung and Panasonic DVD players I have would not allow for this. I tried to trick the camera by first recording to vhs from dvd, and then tranferring it from VHS to DV. This fools the camera for a few seconds, but then it figures it out. Is there anything I can do, any suggestions? Need help asap...

Re: Recording from DVD (URGENT ASAP)

I think most commercially produced DVD have some copy protect feature that scrambles the image when you try to record them.

Re: Recording from DVD (URGENT ASAP)

You're running into a copy protection scheme known as macrovision. Some DVD brands don't support it, and some let you turn macrovision off (check your model numbers on dvdrhelp.com to see if you can).

The easier option is to rip them from your computer, but this would be breaking the DMCA (not that what you're probably wanting to do isn't already illegal in some way). You'd need to download a few free utilities to do it.

Re: Recording from DVD (URGENT ASAP)

no, it is allowed to make a privat backup-copy, so it is not breaking the law (at least over here).

Re: Recording from DVD (URGENT ASAP)

If your tv has a video and audio out, play the dvd and patch those jacks through your cameras RCA jacks. Should work.

Re: Recording from DVD (URGENT ASAP)

maybe try mpeg streamclip 1.1. i think someone posted a link to it over in the FX1 forum here.
i believe it has some export option to go from VOB file to DV. that would maintain as much quality as possible since you're not running into any analog to digital conversions

Re: Recording from DVD (URGENT ASAP)

As its for backup purposes there are lots of tools that allow you extract the .vob files from dvd's.

Just google "ripping dvd mac" and you're bound to find something.

Oncee you've got the vob files you can get utils to convert them to mpg (or they may even import directly in to your NLE?)...though i'm not sure.

Good luck.

Re: Recording from DVD (URGENT ASAP)

Thanks to everyone for their help, i am still trying to find utilities to make this work. I recorded onto an old vcr which worked fine. Played the vcr through the tv and recorded off the tv and for some reason my camera can still detect the encoding, so that unforunately is not working for me, and I have only a couple more days left so am pretty much giving up for now unless i can find the utilities or anyone else has any suggestions.?.?
