Recording Format for ZOOM H4N?

What is the better choice to use for the Zoom:

WAV 44.1K/16bit or 24bit

OR

WAV 48K/16 bit or 24bit

Just trying to see what the difference is in quality between these settings for the Zoom H4N

Thanks!

That depends on your purpose.

If you are recording for a CD, then 44.1kHz. But I assume that you're recording second-system for video, and 48kHz is the rule for digital video.

As for bit-rate, 16-bit is the rate for distribution, but it doesn't hurt to record in 24-bit as that can give you some latitude in post.

Ok cool. Yea I will be recording a Dance performance at a local school and have my audio going to my Zoom as a back up and was just going through settings now trying to decide how I want to set it up. This won't be a concert but will be in an arena and I will be getting my audio fed to me by the Sound Engineers from their board.

One more question: Can levels be adjusted on the fly in the middle of an recording with the Zoom? I guess I can test that now... My shoot isn't until this weekend anyway.

If you're getting your audio fed from a board, there's a good chance they're watching the output levels for you... set the levels and forget. Don't forget to bring your own cables though.

If you're recording the Zoom external mics too, actually touching it to adjust the levels is out, get the remote to do that or accept the handling noise. click. click. click. Otherwise you can adjust levels while recording per stereo pair no problem.

Pascal what I found in my testing, if I have it in 4ch mode, I can turn the 2 onboard mic channels all the way down to mute and then I was able to adjust the 2 Input tracks on the fly and you couldn't hear me tapping the buttons when I played it back.

I had my levels fed from the board before and I set my levels and like you said forgot about it but then when I got home and played it back. I noticed there were sections where my audio was over modulated and I couldn't use it. Thats why I need to be able to make adjustments on the fly if need be.
