Recording film audio with a DR100

Hey guys, just planning preproduction for my debut feature that I'll be filming this June. Basically wanted to ask if anyone's used the DR100 for double system audio, and if so, how hard is it synching up?

I'll have a sound guy (not a pro mind you) with the tascam, boom pole, blimp and my sennheiser mkh50 mic as the set up. 1) was wondering if there is any good cases to hold the dr 100? (the hd p2 has a good one) and 2) What record format do you people record audio in? Would 96khz be over kill? I was originally planning wav 24 bit, 48khz.

Was thinking of doing free run time and syncing with a clapper, what you think? All advice appreciated :)

As long as you use a clapper, and don't roll for more than 15-20 minutes per take, there should be no problem syncing the material (if you're doing it manually).

1: I don't know of any good cases for handhelds, as the problem is getting a good look at the meters while booming (the HD-P2 has a monitor that faces upwards in a bag). This is one of the reasons why many opt for a mixer before the recorder, or a bigger recorder like the HD-P2. If you're handy it should be possible to construct something that will work, and I think there are a few solutions on the web.

2: 24bit 48kHz is the standard for almost all dialogue recording for film. There is very little, if any, benefit to record voices at 96kHz - it just takes up more space and processing power. It's more appropriate for SFX or material that you know will need a lot of heavy filter processing or pitching.

Thanks for the quick reply and thats good to know about the clapper and 24 bit info, thank you! I'll have to think of something for the bag! Anyone else have any ideas about carrying the dr100?

There are cases like THIS that allow the user to add a shoulder/neck strap. It hangs with the on-board macs pointed down. This keeps it close and accessible, but there's still an issue with the meters being readily visible.

Also, there's plenty of information about using the DR-100 and DR-100mkII in this forum. Search around and you may find that many of your questions might have been answered already? Start at the "$300 Recorder" sticky, which has some links to a few discussion threads.

I've been using a dr100mkii with a mix preD while booming and I have them both in portabrace pouches with the mix preD around my neck and the tascam pouch clipped on to the shoulder strap.... We put slits in the bottom of the portabrace for the tascam in order to run xlrs in. This also helps keep the tascam from shifting all over the place in its pouch...with this set up its easy to monitor the mix pre meters.

I'll second the 48/24.

Syncing short takes should not be an issue, even long takes with some luck might stay in sync.

If you use something like a MixPre as your front end, you can set up the recorder and not have to touch it except to stop and start. Personally I would go with a larger recorder so you can see the meters better but if that is what you have it should work, it's just a bit of a pain to operate and see.
