Recording audio from a notebook

How can I record audio from a laptop during a video shoot. I want to be able to shoot video in a room, while having the onboard mic disabled so audio played from a notebook is recorded along with the video.

I have plugged in all the cables, but it only reads audio from the onboard mic.

Thanks.

You would probably need a custom cable, splitting the laptop's 1/8" stereo output into a pair of XLR connectors, one handling the left channel and one the right channel. Plug those into the two XLR jacks on the DVX, set them to line level, and make sure you have the switches under the fold-out LCD set properly. It may take a little tweaking to find the "sweet spot" of level settings between the laptop's output volume and the DVX's input volume--laptop output levels, because the jack doubles as a headphone and speaker output, don't really conform to the usual "line level" specs, so it may be a little soft at first, but don't jack up the laptop too loud, or you may get distortion...

Do you happen to have a specific model for a custom cable like this, a link or just an idea of how to search for it.

Thanks!

Well, my first suggestion would be to find a local audio-visual dealer and see what they could do for you--the one I have was made by our service/install techs.

I don't know that I've ever seen something like this for sale premade; you might have to start with something like this 6-foot mini stereo to 2 RCA cable and then get a couple of these RCA Female to XLR Male adapters (the HK-107M, if I'm reading the terminology correctly). Note that each of those is twice as much as the cable. :)

Personally, I'm not a big fan of adapters, particularly in audio--I'd rather get the cable with the ends I need and not have to worry about losing the adapter or having it go bad on me...
