FS5: Recording 4K internally and viewing on an external Marshall Monitor.

Hello,

I am using the Sony FS5 with an older Marshall Electronics 7" HDMI monitor.
When I record in HD, I am able to view the image on the external monitor, but as soon as I switch over to 4K, and press record, the image on the monitor goes blank.

Is there a way around this to view the image on the external monitor, as it is being recorded, in 4K? If not, what product would I need to accomplish this?

I recall last fall there was talk of this problem, but I wasn't clear if this was an issue that was resolved in the firmware update, and I was wondering if there was special settings I may have made a mistake with.

Thank you.

v1.1 made it so you can have simultaneous use of 4K internal recording and HD SDI output at the same time – at the expense of losing the video image on the built-in display.

So yes, it should work in your case. Have you updated your firmware to v1.1 yet?

As I warn in my FS5 training video, the FS5 can only send a signal to two places at once:

The choices are:

1) SDI or HDMI output
2) Viewfinder or LCD Panel
3) Internal SD card(s)

You can view #1 and #2 in standby, but the moment you press the record button and video starts flowing to #3, you're going to lose either #1 or #2. You can change the menu to choose which one you want to give up, but it's going to be one or the other. You can never have video to all three at once and I don't beleive that can ever be fixed with a firmware change. The electronics of the camera are grossly underpowered for 4K work.

Thanks for the replies.

Yep, I have upgraded to 1.11

Unfortunately looks like I am hooped for the time being.

To provide context, I am mounting the Sony FS5 on a Letus Helix Jr, then with a really long (3.6m) HDMI cord, having that connected to a external monitor that the client can hold and view to watch what I am shooting.

The movement isn't too crazy, it's just 5 people sitting around a table having a discussion, being shot with 1 camera and 5 lav mics, but they wanted me to follow the "flow" of the conversation.

We'll see if it works.

That was the dealbreaker for me on the FS5. I have to set up a monitor for producers for interviews... If I shoot 4K i couldn't have my own screen anymore! heh
You could always loop-through with another monitor... but that means the cost of another monitor, batteries, etc.
