Recorder to match up with mixpre

I have this very set up and here is what I have done based on the information found on Dan McComb's web site.

http://www.danmccomb.com/posts/987/connecting-zoom-h4n-to-sound-devices-mixpre-part-ii/

Here is the salient information.

“Sound Devices says to connect the MixPre main outs to unbalanced inputs, simply leave output pin 3 unconnected, so wire ‘em XLR pin 2 to tip, XLR pin 1 to sleeve, XLR pin 3 floating. MixPre main outs to H4n Line In. If the problem people are running into is finding the MixPre output too hot, floating pin 3 reduces the level by 6dB. Problem solved. “

"Hi There, I have been using Mix Pre’s for some time with the H4N on many shoots now with success. I have been using the main XLR outs to TRS 1/4″ inputs on the H4N, using my own cables that have a floating no 3 pin on the XLR plugs. This setup sounds amazing! the H4N batteries last A LOT longer, make sure you remember to disengage your sucky H4N limiters and filters".

I took a XLR cable and a 1/4 trs right angled plug and made my own with pin 3 floating (not connected) and it works fine.

My back up set up is to use an attenuated 3.5 mm cable like this one from B & H made by Sescom, also works great.

Hope this helps!
