F3: Recorder for Sony's F3 RGB 4:4:4 output

I am looking for a recorder that supports Sony's F3 RGB 4:4:4 output.
Would be great to use the Atomos Shogun, but it seems that it doesn't support the F3.
Any recommendations?

Thanks for your help!

SoundDevices PIX-E Series recorders. But they were just introduced at NAB2015 and aren't on the street yet. The Convergent Design O7Q will do it, albeit to .dpx format, which isn't compressed and takes a lot of disk space.

Pix240(i) used - or wait for the e-series
CD Odyssey does not support the F3's 3G RGB output as the F3 must be set 1.5 YCBR
I'm always shooting ProRes HQ
& ProRes 444 for EFX
Some F3 users here use the BMagic recorder albeit the weak bnc connections

Thanks for your notes.

What about output RGB 4:4:4 from the Sony F3 and record ProRes 422 (HQ) to the Atomos Shogun?
For sure, I will loose information but is it still ok? How does it work, any experiences with that?

The 4:4:4 on the PMW-F3 is something of a cheat. The camera's 3.36MP Bayer sensor doesn't really have enough photosites to fully resolve 4:4:4 color at 1080p. Just know that. RGB 4:4:4 from the F23 or F35 are an entirely different beast. In any case...

If you're recording 4:2:2 on the Shogun, I think it would expect the input to be 4:2:2, but even if the Shogun offers an on the fly downcovert to 4:2:2 I don't see how that's superior to just outputting 4:2:2 from the camera in the first place. Of course, assuming such a feature exists, you would be able to test it and know for yourself.

One more recorder to mention in passing is the Sony SR-R1. It was designed to work with the F3, and even supports varispeed recording, and can take the F3 metadata and can match file names to those on the SxS cards for dual recording. That said, it's a beast, and only sensible if you get a real steal of deal on eBay.

You could also look, in theory, at Cinedeck, which is outdated and very bulky, but have been going for very low prices. Or Codex or an S.Two OB1 recorder. All options. But something like the O7Q might be the best bet for current gen tech that's less bulky.

The Odyssey7Q and Odyssey7Q+ most certainly do support the Sony F3 444 RGB output. It can record it in .DPX format and in the future will record from it in compressed 4444.

Sounds interesting. Do I have to buy any firmware/codec update or will it be "straight out of the box"?

I'm running my F3L with the 7Q+ (RGB444 paid upgrade). Works like a charm and I recommend this setup.

Mitch, is there a chance that the 7Q+ will someday be able to record Prores 444 XQ from the F3? Even a paid option would be great...

thx

Thanks guys, you really helped me.

How does the 50fps output at 1080p work?
Is it only possible with Dual Link and RGB 4:4:4?
How does it work?

The 50fps/60fps mode on the PMW-F3 only works in 4:2:2, not RGB 4:4:4, I beleive. It must be sent over either dual link or 3G - it's too much data for SDI 1.5 standard.

That said, you can use it without the RGB option installed. It's available on the camera as a standard feature, I beleive. At least as a dual link.

There are recorders that support 50p and 60p recording. SR-R1, Codex, OB1, Cinedeck, Gemini, O7Q I beleive all will. Now, for the variframe recording (off speed), only the SRR1 is compatible as far as I know.

So the Atomos Shogun won't work since it only has one 6G-SDI connector, right?

Thanks for all the help.

Seems like the CD O7Q is the best solution since a) it has all the features to properly use the Sony F3, b) it's kind of lightweight/handy and c) it's affordable (even when its still over my budget). Moreover, the CD O7Q is a monitor, too.
