Record uncompressed 14-bit (4:4:4) on your HVX200

I hope that they havent sold it to Panasonic or a manufacture. If they have then it will never see the light of day. This would greatly change my opinion of Juan and his company. :(

Whatever the buyer does with the technology is out of Juan's hands.
In the end, this is a business like any other - he has put alot into it over the past few years, and if this sale was able to make him a tidy profit, then I for one say congrats to him and the entire crew that built 'Reel Stream' from the ground up.

If whoever buys it did so simply to bury it...well, then your opinion of the buyer should change.... not the seller.
I seriously doubt anyone approached Reel Stream and said, "Hey, can we buy your technology so we can bury it and never let it see the light of day?"

:)

That's disappointing to hear after all its hype.

I hope those interested will still be able to purchase.

Probably the company that the Hydra system would hurt the most would be Sony. They been strugling to keep up with Panisonic on this price range of camera for a while now. Sure Panisonic would loose a little sales on P2 cards and it might take a small dent out of there high end camera sales, but they would gain sales in the DVX and HVX. Sony only has one camera worth buying in my opinion and thats the CineAlta. Most everything else has interlaced chips and records HDV. With an interlaced chip, Sony would not benifit nearly as much from Hydra as Paniconic would. Plus doen't that sound like Sony business practices? Sony's probable trying to buy RED now.

I agree and with Luis. Juan conceived and developed the product and has the right to do with it as he sees fit. But if it was purchased by a company it was done to either adapt and use the technology or else protect an existing product. From a pure business perspective this is the only reason a company would buy such a product.
I would think it is for the first; somebody sees the potential for this product and wishes to use or adapt it for their own reasons. Whatever the reason its a pity HVX users will not be able to use this product to extend the range of their camera. I for one would have loved to see a 2 K image from the HVX, alas it doesnt seem like its going to happen.

A.) wait for the official word before assuming the worst
B.) not to dis the person who posted this, but it seems awfully suspect that a first time poster would be the one breaking this sorta news. We need confirmation from others before we start believing a first time poster (reel stream i mean).

I agree, although I couldn't help but post this info because any news on hydra is of great importance. Now that I look back, it is very suspicious so I just e-mailed Juan.

It doesn't make sense that Juan would let a member be in charge of informing us on their product status. Especially through e-mail.

I guess we will just have to wait and see

That's a good point. This news hit me kinda hard cause the Andromeda was easily the best camera in it's class, and if it really is dead, then it leaves a giant hole. And Hydra was gonna be even bigger too.
Lets hope it's not for real.

The guy who posted this info on the reel-stream forum said at the end, " I'm bummed, I guess I'll have to sell my dvx and get an hvx".

On his website it says he already has an hvx200 and used it on a film in october.
I think he wants people to give up on their future dvx andromeda and just buy a hvx.
He's full of B.S.

Until you hear official word, its just that unofficial. I have had my own private dialog with Juan over the past few months, but I'm keeping that confidential.

I'm crossing my fingers that he'll do a blitz release of Hydra for those wanting it, and then go forward with the transaction.

I'm also hoping it gets bought by a larger independent company that continues to distribute the mod. A while back, I remember reading that the hardware for Hydra is different, and the possibility to install it into other true 24P cameras was a reality (24"F" systems won't work for those wondering). As I understand it, all you would need to do is modify the software end of things.

Crossing my fingers....

Well it actually many just make it a better product inthe end. Cheaper, more user friendly interface etc....

As a business man myself, I can't help but think ReelStream would be worth a hell of a lot more after the Hydra release than before. Which makes me think ether the rumer is false, The other company had some kind of leverage, or Juan just sold us out. Now from the little I know about Juan I can't see him selling us (the entire film community) out, so it has to be one of the other two. I think it was some kind of a threat of a lawsuit. If it's a big company like Sony or Panasonic they could lose the lawsuit and it would still bankrupt a small company like RealStream with all the court expences. Or maybe I've just watched too many movies.

i just read this at the end of the shoot. i'm seriously depressed, but still have hope.

either its just a rumor by this person, or it is really true

and if juan sold it to someone, hopefully that someone will keep developing. otherwise i aint joining one of these threads and give up my hopes for nothing.

still waiting from an official reel stream announcement and not some dude i never heard of

Geez, it's over guys. . . Hydra isn't going to come out. Juan has either "sold" his company, or closed it. If he really did sell it, and he sold it to a large company, there is NO WAY it will come out for the HVX and it won't be available further for the DVX, either.

The fact that Juan isn't posting ANY communication pretty much says it all. . . he really doesn't want to give us the bad news personally. I think I pretty much knew this game was over six months ago, but this definitely seals it.

If the rumor wasn't true, Juan would have to be a complete idiot to not counter it immediately. The fact that he hasn't posted anything for WEEKS on his site and has remained completely silent to everyone (except apparently CardMaverick) tells it's own tale.

Bottom line: Hydra is toast. Absolutely. Unequivocally.

I'm just glad I've got that RED ordered!

What if he sold it to Panasonic, and they incorporated the technology in the HVX200a? That might be a rather interesting development...

I record things.............me too...just kiddin

you will need an HVX obviously, roughly between 4-6k for the camera (depends if new or used) then the HYDRA mod is about $3500 the last time someone mentioned....so you can get a full 2kres system at 4:4:4 sampling and an estimated 10-13 stops (hopefully) at under $8000. There are no 2k cameras for that price, the closest is the silicon imaging si-2, but thats about 13-15000 for the mini. do the math.

when will the HYDRA come out? someone mentioned at the end of 2007, hey wait, thats soon, crossing fingers.

hope this helps
What I was looking for was a bit more specific. Namely, if buying a brand new HVX + the Hydra would be more expensive than buying an HVX from Reel-Stream premodded. But alas, I suppose that hinges on whether or not it's actually coming out, from them or anyone else. But thanks!

Really? You're convinced of this after one poster's comment, without any further proof that what he's said is true? How easy would it be for you or me to wrap a phony message in quotes and slap "Cheers, Juan" on the end of it? Maybe he knew people would react to the rumor after such a long, dry spell of news—much like everyone is doing now?

If we can hold out this long for Hydra, I think we can wait for the official word. And for no news to come out ever would just be bad PR... even if Reel-Steam is no longer in business, they've demonstrated that they value customer feedback in the past, so I don't think it will be an issue.

And if this were true then the original poster would have atleast dialogued back with us on the real stream forums, but, no, he's nowhere to be seen! Typical trolling. Ill give him this, though. He got what he wanted...to stir up the rumor mill. Congrats!

I don't think it's a baseless rumor. The Reel Stream homepage redirects to the forums, where I expect Juan to post an official announcement soon.

If, as Barry has suggested, Panasonic has bought the technology, I would expect an HVX200"a" with Hydra built in to be the cheapest way. After all, Juan has to take the camera apart, retrofit the new circuitry and cut the housing to take the new port, and do all this at a reasonable profit. Panasonic could easily integrate the Hydra circuitry -- if indeed additional circuitry is even necessary -- and port in the manufacture of the camera. What was $3,500 is reduced to, what, maybe $50? Who knows, Panasonic might even throw in an LCD flip.

What I'd like to see is a camera with removable lens, Hydra capability, and half-inch global-shutter CMOS chips (at least 1,280 x 720 native) that can be spatially offset by Hydra to yield at least 2.5-3K. All for what the HVX200 now costs (or less).
