Record to Adobe On Location from AF 100

Does anyone have ideas about how to record direct to disk using Adobe On Loation from the AF100?

......... it likes Firewire IN.

I´m a beta tester for OnLocation and during the CS5 testing period, I did everything to talk Adobe into supporting third party cards, like Black Magic - sadly that didn't happen. Maybe next time.

Firewire is disappearing from many cameras, and the USB 'replacement' really doesn't have a 'live video mode'. The MTS files can be used by On Location. I'm using my GH-1 as an test case, as I don't have a AF-100... but one would still have to transfer them from the recording medium to the On Location system.

As for alternatives, I did see some mention of the AF-100 having HDMI or HDSDI outputs, so a quick search for a digitizer to Firewire box, indicates at least one instance of such a product for about $3-4K US, and you could then capture via On Location.

It´s a bizarre situation.

Hobbyists with Firewire cameras want to be fast, lightweight and easy - so they would probably not consider bringing a computer for a shooting, that is permanent attached to the camera.

The pros that show up on the set with thee 5-ton trucks, would not care to bring a extra workstation, but they would use SDI, which does not work with OL.

So almost nobody can use it. Adobe turned a great capturing solution into a nifty card reading metadata organizer.
That´s really sad. OL has an enormous potential. Together with Adobe Story and PremierePro it would speed up the work flow, saves a ton of time and makes things much easier to handle.
If it would only support third party capturing cards.

Grrrrr

OnLocation supports FW out, and that's about it.

Wish it were different. Perhaps it may be. But the the robustness of the AVCHD implementation and prospective card capabilities, it looks pretty good out of the box.

I know... sadly, I was thinking it would be a nice alternative for shooting studio green screen footage. The lack of any type of connection from camera (AF100) to a laptop is a handicap... One thing I have really liked in the past with the DVX100, was to use ULTRA "live preview" firewire from cam to laptop to match lighting to keyed backgrounds on the spot with Ultra running... you could really see what you were going to get. The same company that originally made Ultra also started with a direct to disk recorder that ultimately became On Location when they sold Ultra to Adobe. $3k is too much to convert to firewire in... wonder if there is another input on a laptop we could use?

The number of 'inputs' to laptops seem to be dwindling. Most of the consumer devices are USB based, most of the low end prosumer devices are USB. This is not really a fault of On Location, as the manufacturers of cameras and laptops which are minimizing their costs to put only USB interfaces on their equipment.

So, yeah, it seems like one needs a $3-4K USD device to 'compensate' these days.

If this thing actually had any compatibility whatsoever with any USB3 laptops in existence, and if Adobe made OnLocation work with it, this would be the solution:

However, the only laptop that ever did work with it is the now-discontinued HP Envy 15". Hopefully BlackMagic will get around to making their USB3 products *actually compatible* with USB3...

Direct connectivity died with firewire. The last direct connection you could get over firewire was HDV. No modern camcorder codec has direct output -- not AVC-Intra, not XDCAM-HD or XDCAM-EX, not XDCAM-MPEG422, not RedCode, not NXCAM or AVCCAM... it just doesn't exist. If you want direct-to-laptop connectivity, in HD, your choices start and end with DVCPRO-HD and HDV.

If you want a direct connection to a computer, your choice is HDMI or HD-SDI and an appropriate HDMI or HD-SDI capture card. Which means using a desktop box, as there is no viable and valid solution for a laptop (unless, apparently, you want to use an external ExpressCard -> PCIe expansion chassis).

So, there is no way whatsoever to use Adobe On Location with the HMC150 or AF100? What about the HVX 200? Any luck with that model?

One could use On Location with other cameras that don't have Firewire, just not 'live'. Clips can be imported and viewed. The problem of course is that it is not realtime viewing... unless you get a converter box that produces Firewire output, from whatever realtime outputs the camera has.

OnLocation only takes firewire input. AF100 and HMC150 don't have firewire output, so ... no, you can't use it for live recording or live monitoring. You can, however, import recorded clips into it after the fact.

And yes, the HVX200 has firewire output and is fully compatible with OnLocation.
