I can't seem to find anything on it...

Maybe I mixed it up with the HVX at NAB... I know that with the HVX you can do a firmware update to the camera and double your record times...

Can you do the same with the 500...
 
hmmm - maybe this was in reference to the firmware update that allows the HVX to utilize 16gb cards - this in effect doubles recording time, but not per GB. I think the 500 came ready to handle the 16GB cards out of the box.
 
..there was most likely never an update that "doubled" the recording time, nor for the HVX, or for the HPX..i guess you really mixed up with the 16GB, or maybe with the update of the firmware for the firestore??
 
Gary, the updated firmware for the HVX200 is not to double your storage capacity of an 8 gig P2. It was meant for the ability to use the new 16 gig card on your HVX200.
 
The 16GB firmware update allows the use of 16GB cards, which would give double the recording time by using 16GB cards.

What you may be referring to is the introduction of AVC-Intra, a new format that gives roughly equivalent recording quality in half the bandwidth (i.e., 50 megabits). That would give you twice the recording time per gigabyte. But that's not an option for the HVX200 or HPX500, it exists only as an add-in board for the HPX2000 and as standard equipment on the HPX3000.

Playing with my new HPX500 with 4 16g cards init the displays says it has 170 minutes in 720/ 24pn

I'm kinda bumbed that there is no 24pn for 1080 and it looks like there is no
1080p, only 1080i that does a 24p like the varicam system that always recods 60 frames.

I'm still incredibly pleased with the image, of course, I'm using a 35 thousand dollar lens my friend lent me :) I wasn't interested in the lenses they were offering with the package. I'd rather rent a top end lens from my friend.
 
It's 1080p the same way the DVX is 480p -- it simply needs to be recorded in 1080i/60 stream, just as on the DVX, it needs to be recorded in a 480i/60 stream.

But it IS 1080p.
