Record Time for video

the camera supports fat16 so the limit is 2gb. i don't think the current compression even with an extremely complex scene can ever reach that, i've never managed to go over 1gb, which is why i think they either played it safe or they originally had a higher bitrate in mind (damn).

Hi,

I originally thought it was operating system, too, but understood it was to avoid the EU valued added tax on camcorders (anything that recorded 5 continuous minutes of HD footage).

Operating system makes more general sense or why would there be a limit on SD or smaller?

No, actually the tax stipulates that anything that can continuously record at least 30 minutes of video is classified as a camcorder.

...which is why file stitching isn't implemented to allow seamless stitching of 2GB files. If enabled, users could stitch files until their cards were full.

This is why record time on PAL GH1's is limited to 30 minutes even though NTSC GH1's can file stitch until the card is full.
