Record in B&W? HELP!!!

I have a job tomorrow that need to be shot in B&W. I use the Panasonic DVC 80 and I know now that it's not possible to shoot that in B&W. One I was hoping some could help me figure a solution to the problem. Here are a few snags in the situation, for one I need to hand the DV tape off to the client at the shoot, and second I will be recording it on to the daillies (3 VCRS). I don't own a consumer camera, but I'm looking to barrow or rent one. Another question is if the consumer camera I rent/barrow does what I need it to would the daillies be recoring in B&W? I am 99% sure it would but it is one of those clients that I nned to be 100% on.
Thanks,
Dave

It's easy in Vegas to pull the chroma down. You can even give it a colorized or sepia look if you want. I must admit I haven't a clue if it is even possible to do it in camera.

Re: Record in B&W? HELP!!!

..borrow the consumer cam today.. and test it out today.

otherwise they should be able to just change it to black and white in post without any hassle or issue.. unless they are not doing any further editing on it, or will be editing it with a video phone program, it shoudnt even be an issue... i would call and ask them if they can just do it in post... unless asking would be a ding in your rankings as a pro camera op with them.

Re: Record in B&W? HELP!!!

I would love to be able to change in post. Of course that the easy way out of this problem. What the job is that i will be shooting a casting for a B&W print ad. At the end of the shoot I have tio hand the tape to the producer for there viewing pleasure. I don't even thing that they will edit anything. There is a possability that the photographer will edit from the DV tape in iMovie. That is what he has done a few times before. That for the help guys.

Tell the Producers it will require B and W in Post and that DV isnt going to shoot B and W.

Re: Record in B&W? HELP!!!

They problem have been solved. They will take what I can give them and will deal with the problem later. That mean it isn't my problem any more. I am now destressed.
Thanks again,
Dave

Re: Record in B&W? HELP!!!

Now, this is a pretty messed up and jury-rigged solution, and I may have things slightly inverted, but I think it might work! I don't have my dvx with me so I can't test it, though. First, find something bright red, and white balance to this object. Your footage should now be in different shades of green (and also a bit grainy due to the weird white balance setting.) Then, shoot through a red filter which will let no green light through (or whatever color is the anti-green; I don't know my color wheel that well.) You'll have to adjust scene file settings to get the color temperature exactly opposite. Or you could just white balance on a white balance card through the filter you plan to shoot through, I think. Then crank the chroma down, and adjust color temperature/phase until it looks black and white.

Okay, I'm kind of confused but this would probably work and give you nearly black and white footage, with maybe a little tint. It's an ugly solution, but I want some points for creativity. GIVE ME POINTS!

Depending on the filter/color you use, your footage would look different, too. Not necessarily bad different, but different.
