Record HD while recording SD to tape?

I am a bit confused. On the Firestor website FAQ's for FS_100, it says you can record HD to the Firestor while recording SD to tape. I thought only DV can be recorded to tape. I see nothing in either manuals (no surprise there) about this. Can anyone explain?

Many thanx,

You cannot do what they say.

If you were recording DV, then yes the firestore could record DV while the tape simultaneously recorded DV.

But in HD mode, the tape drive is inactive. You simply cannot run the tape at the same time as you're shooting HD.

Yeah, I know that it would just be a time saver getting it done at the same time. Would be something nice for the HVX200a, when that rolls around in a year or so. You know something that sends the DVCPro 25/50 or DVCPro HD material through another set of comprassion and that goes to the Tape drive.

I don't know the actual programming of the HVX but couldn't it be a simple if/else if statement

if -(User select DV Dub for Offline Edit) Send video for Recompression then send to DV Tape Drive. (Retain frame rates, any variable frame rate selection - ask user for DV Dub Frame rate. I.E: 12p over 480/24p, which then be over 480/60I.) From here it would pass the recompressed video to the Tape Drive and the original material would continue on to the P2 Drive.

Else if -(User doesn't select dub.) Bypass

and then from the bypass it would go into the current programming, it would bypass if you want MiniDV and P2 at the same time also, since DV can already go to both, just retain the programming there.

It isn't going to happen anytime soon. When the switch is in "P2" mode the system doesn't even know the tape drive exists. You can't even eject the tape when in P2 mode.

The only time they co-exist is when the switch is in tape mode and you go to dub files.

Didn't know that.....LOL, I really need to get this camera.

Focus I think released the FS-100 too early. But probably wanted to make the sacrifice to be first on the market. They have bad info in several places. Like in the User Guide, for Macs, it says the FS-100 will show up with a "PC Symbol". There is no "PC Symbol" on a Mac. It shows up with the standard icon for a Firewire device! Also, that the "eject button" will eject the FS-100. No, the eject button only works with the CD/DVD drive! Gives me huge doubt about who is writing their docs!

Any body ever record the signal coming out of 1399 while recording to tape? The Panna manual refers to DVCPRO (as opposed to DVCPRO50 or DVCPROHD) as SD. Maybe if DVCPRO is selected, firewire puts out HD? A shot in the dark, but considering the shortcomings of the manual, I wouldn't be surprised if it did. I'm not near the camera and will try it when I am. Anybody already tried?

It cannot do what you ask.

The camera outputs whatever signal is appropriate for the mode it's in. if you're shooting HD, the signal that's output is HD.

There is no possibility whatsoever, under any circumstances at all, that you can record SD and HD at the same time. The product simply does not do that.

If you must have SD while recording HD then buy a cheap MiniDV cam, strap it to your tripod, and record via composite/s-video.
