I am filming a 4 hour long show tomorrow and i need to know how i can record footage from my hmc directly to my computer harddrives.

No.

You can't stream video over a USB cable, not in the same way you can a Firewire cable. The camera and USB interfaces in general weren't designed that way. And unless your laptop has some sort of HDMI input (which is rare if they even exist as most are simply outputs), you can't record that way either. You need a dedicated piece of video capture hardware, be it a BlackMagic Intensity Shuttle, or a Matrox MX02 Mini, or something similar.

You can always use a 32GB card at 17 mb/s. If you don't mind it's interlaced and a little bit lower res than PH modes.

Are you going to be recording a single long, 4 hour scene? If not, just swap out the card during a break.....why sacrifice quality?

But keep in mind you'll need one of those programs that stitches the clips back together, since it will cut them with they hit 4GB.

No, pretty much every recent version of all the NLE's will do that automatically, assuming you import t he footage properly.
