record dvx100a to hard drive setting

In my setting of the dxv there is a option to record to a hard drive. Does this mean I can record direct to any firewire HD in the field or do I need to use a interface such a FCP or a special HD

There is no setting for direct-to-hard drive. There's a setting that allows you to control an external recorder, but that was originally designed to control other cameras or tape decks. You cannot control an external firewire hard drive with the DVX.

You can use a dedicated hard disk recorder like the FireStore FS-4, but not an off-the-shelf firewire hard disk (unless it's attached to a computer, and the computer is running something like DV Rack or FCP or Vegas).
