GH3 Record audio to external source, or route it to mic input?

Im thinking of getting a tascam DR-whatever, and Im curious about the difference in quality between recording the audio to the tascam itself, or routing the audio from it to the mic input on the GH3. Does the tascam have a higher quality recording mechanism? Does it give you more flexibility?

External will generally be better, but it can be helpful to plumb a line-out to your recording camera to get a solid reference track
