GH4 Record 4K and export HD via HDMI?????

I have a friend that I am arguing with!

Can a GH4 record in 4K and export HD to a monitor via HDMI? I told her you can but she says no. I do not have this camera or I would try it myself.

It would be stupid if you can't.

Yes. It can export HDMI in 4k, it can also down convert to 1080p. It can record internally and export to HDMI in 8-bit. The only limitation is it cannot record internally and export 10-bit HDMI simultaneously.

We read page 65 many times......I think her GH4 is sick. It works fine if record is set to HD. 4K playback is fine but not live viewing in 4K.

You might not have a 4k capable cable (HDMI 2.0) or monitor. Does it work if it is 4k but set to down convert to 1080p? Might also want to try different system frequencies. (59.95, 50 or 24hz).

What Batutta said. Try a different cable. You need one that says 4K or HDMI2.0, even when outputting 1080p. Also try different options such as Auto and 1080p in camera. And make sure your monitor can accept proper video signals.

Give us a list of model numbers etc you are working with, then it will be easier to pinpoint the problem.

Did you buy the camera new? If it's second hand, someone may have sold it because HDMI out was broken, without telling you.

Lots of possible issues, but the camera is most definitely capable when working correctly.

Cheers,

Paul :)

I remember I wanted to do the same thing with my Ninja 2 and had problems myself at first. So here is the deal:

1. You can record internally at 4:2:0 while outputting downsampled 4k-1080p at 4:2:2 8-bit, but you can't view it on the GH4's monitor!
2. If you chose HDMI recording using the shutter button, you cannot stop recording on the remote unit using the same button! You have to use the GH4's dedicated record button. I thought my GH4 was locked up until I stumbled upon this by accident. Go figure...

We tried three different cables....not cheap. Also tested with my SmallHD 5" monitor. No luck.

Tried all of the above.

Thanks

Please check my previous post. I did this on my camera and Ninja 2 as I wrote it, so I absolutely know it works. But, it seems that it's not working since no image is shown on the GH4.

We were not looking at the GH4 screen.....only the SmallHD monitor and her Digital Juice monitor (crap monitor).

It's probably a hardware problem at this point. Either damaged HDMI port or something else, considering it works in 1080p. Only way to know for sure is to get another GH4 to test. Might also want to try doing a factory reset, or updating or re-installing the firmware.

Without a doubt the GH4 can send HD out the HDMI port while recording 4k internal. That was the original point to the HDMI on the GH4. So users could use external monitors to help them focus and use scopes to exposure their shots. This is not to record externally but to just view what you are recording internally. If the GH4 couldn't do this there would have been a lot of very upset people since the camera would be worthless with external monitors. You could even do this on the GH3 and the GH2. Did it all the time and never considered recording externally with the GH2 or GH3 since the output wasn't a true uncompressed signal.

Some lower level Panasonic cameras do in fact kill the HDMI output when the camera is recording but the GH4 is absolutely not one of those cameras.

A few questions:

1. Do you get HDMI output when the camera isn't recording?

2. Do you get any messages on the GH4 LCD when you hook up the HDMI cable to the monitor?

3. Was the camera purchased used? The flimsy GH4 HDMI is very easy to break and lots of people have broken their ports. Some of us use cages or HDMI locks to prevent this kind of damage.

4. Are you 100% sure you are not trying to output 4k video from the HDMI port? It should be set to auto or 1080p to force the signal down conversion to HD. Most monitors out there will not take in a 4k HDMI signal.

5. Do you have a HDTV you can test on? These things will take in just about any camera signal while some camera monitors can be a bit picky.

6. What frame rate are you shooting at? If it is 24p are you using then normal 23.98 video standard or cinema 4k true 24p. Some monitors don't work with the cinema 24p frame rate since it isn't a video standard.
