reconsidering the dvx100 purchase-help? :]

hey guys!
As a dvx100-user wannbe, but as a newb, i try to find out as much technical information bout the camera, its way of usage and handling, and compatibility towards my needs.

Recently i went to the university of media and communication that i am due to study at-pretty soon, and met this teacher there. He's in charge of all the cameras...editing stuff.
I told him im interested in buying a dvx100, and i wanna know more if it will fit me.

So first of all...i found out that the school is using dvx100a cameras. .. its was nice to find out...but in a way disappointing coz i wanted to get the "upper hand" in my projects in school. doesnt matter...
I told him that i am uncertain bout the 24p 25p difference in looks and motion [as we use PAL..but all ive seen and liked was 24p].. but soon this question was gone .... cause when i told him i wanna use 25p only [there are people who buy these cameras only for the progressive look].. so he told me i might have a problem.

I bet 99.9% of my work will be burning the projects into DVD's and give them to people to view in their TV's and DVD players.
He told me that not All TV's can broadcast the progressive method and therefore if i plan on using 25p...then it will be a problem.
He said the DVD players might be a problem too... but much less...as most of them Can read progressive...

first...this taught me alot...making me realise..maybe i will be spending alot of money on a product i dunno wether will be able to serve me right...coz i guess i dunno alot more bout the technical competibility...

plus-this whole thing made me reconsider the dvx100...and think again on those sony HDV cameras... which i prefer less...

is that true what he said?
ill appreciate any remarks...

thanx guys! :]
:dankk2:

Nope. Or, at least, not really.

If the TV is not progressive, the DVD player will convert to what is needed.

Think "film". It's not shot interlaced and the digital versions work fine on TVs, yes? It's mostly not even laid down on the DVD as interlaced..."flags" are put in insteda to tell the player to added the extra frames when necessary.

It pains me that this guy teaches this stuff and he doesn't know what he's talking about. Can you get your money back?

haha.... damn! so u wanna tell me he was wrong?
wow... and peple say not to take forums seriously.. i bet people here are more professional..

so u wanna say its only up to the Player ...right? the DVD player. ok got it!
though i would appreciate a simpler example than what GenJerDan wrote [no offense :]
anyways...thanx! it is comforting..
thing is...i still dunno...if theyre using this cam at school..should i spend so much on purchasing one? taking care of it.. insurance etc..? or i could try to enjoy it as much as i can [with school permission] but not 24/7...?
still is a dilemma.

p.s-horsy- :] ...i didnt start studying actually...but i will be careful.. maybe i will teach this guy a thing or two using this forum :]

I'll tell you this. I only shoot 24p. I don't own anything but an interlaced TV and I don't have any problems watching the stuff I shoot on any TV I own. Any modern DVD player will automatically make the progressive footage viewable on a standard television. You have nothing to worry about.

You could consider waiting to buy the camera until you get a little experience using one (just to make sure you like it). Once you use one, I think you'll be hooked.

id say if you can have access to a 100a on campus use at much as you can learn it and use it all you can and save the money of buying if you can use the school cam.

Shoot in whatever you wish, when you make the DVD, it will convert it to DVD format (Mpeg2) to play on an interlaced TV. It bums me too that your teach is such a tool. Why buy one if you have access to one for free? Put hours on theirs, learn it, then get your own to abuse... :)

Well, that's a bit confusing. Because you could burn an interlaced DVD, or you could burn a progressive DVD. MPEG-2 isn't inherently one way or another. If you burn a progressive DVD the DVD player will add 2:3 pulldown to make the footage interlaced so that it will play on an interlaced TV. If it's a progressive display it won't change it at all. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

I wonder if there was a mis-communication between you and the instructor.
Maybe he meant you couldn't play an NTSC signal on PAL or PAL on NTSC?

If you can buy the DVX100 then buy it, maybe after using the school cameras to get to know it. I went to film school and had a Canon GL2 (now I have a DVX100B), but this helped me out a lot! Just being able to have the freedom of shooting whenever was convenient for me. Other students either ended up with 1 ccd cameras or had to wait to be able to use any 3 ccd cameras.

Um, isn't pretty much every major motion picture released on DVD these days essentially 24p? Can everyone play those discs at home? LOL!

first of all..thanx for the responses..
and to BillP-no..i know NTSC and PAL.. and there was nothing mentioned bout NTSC in our conversation since were in a PAL country and NTSC is not an option...
well...i feel kinda bad now.....bout that teacher...heh..i think ill just confirm what i learn in class-in here-from now on ... it is sad...but u know..were all human.. so he missed a class or two...
anyways....thing is...it does make sense that i will use the cameras at school and Then buy the DVX100 myself after i abuse thiers...
BUT
the whole point here is that im flying to the U.S BEFORE starting school... and u have lower prices there [although guess i wont have any warranty..but price difference is more than 1000$].... so i wanted to take advantage of it...

guess we will see how much money ill have in the end of the day...and then decide wether to go with the DVX100 or with the sony HC3... or A1.

bottom line-i wanna come back with a broadcast "worthy" kinda camera..

Why would you want either of those Sony HDV cameras, if you want somethine "broadcast worthy"? Most places can't even broadcast HD. Sure you will get bigger images with the Sony HDVs but the HC3 especially, is a consumer camera, not a professional camera like the DVX. So you will get less manual control on both of the HDV cameras compared to the DVX.
PS: If you don't need 24p and XLR inputs and couple other things, then maybe you should look at the DVC30?

Atually coming originally from PAL land (Australia) I can tell you that most DVD players in Australia can play PAL or ntsc. Im not sure where you are but thats Aussie for you. Other way around is a different matter.

well..im in israel.pal here :]
dvd's that play NTSC and PAL u say? shouldnt u have a multisystem tv as well?
anyways....i hate it all... who made so many methods? its all damn politics.

sails..thanx man. heared bout the DVC30...though i found only one video sample online... would u have more links? i think its a good cam but has less filmy\documentry look to it.
and...its not the bigger image or resolution i look for in the HD cameras. its the looks...motion..and feel. i know i will use SD in it ..or maybe downsize it in post production.

I had instructors like that as well. Always talking as if they know EVERYTHING and later on you realize, they're wrong. If you reconsider the DVX then I hope it's only a financial decision not a technical one.

You will have no problems with the footage playing 24P footage on a DVD player. That's just silly. High five your teacher for me. lol jk

Peace
