Will mainly be used for interviews and documentaries, though will also be using it shoot some short films. I would like to spend around $1,500. Can anyone recommend anything?

Thanks.

I double second that... just upgraded to the DV 6 SB from a 501 head... now I want all those lost years back.

even if im in this biz for another 20 years - i will never, ever understand how a tripod can cost $5000

When I went to the RED LA User Group, most of the RED Owners there had their cameras on O'Connors that cost $12,000.00. $5,000.00 is chicken feed when you get into 35mm or larger HD cameras.

Spend the extra dough and get a Miller Arrow 25. It's about 2300.00 and by far blows away any Sachtler up to Sachtler 25. The Miller is the best gear investment I've made next to my Zacuto kit. On a recent job where production supplied all the gear, after a day I swapped out the Sachtler 25 for my Miller. I personally am not a fan of Sachtler 4 through 20. I find their movement to have "spongy/springy" quality to it. Nothing close to my Miller or an OC. Another brand worth looking into is the Panther T 10. Again, considerably smoother than Sachtler's in the same class. I find Sachtlers could be much smoother for the cash. Once you get beyond Sachtler 25 and up, their movement is in a different class than their "low" end. If 1500.00 is your ceiling, I'd seriously look into Libec. I think the smoothness blows aways the low end Sachtlers.

After 20 years of blown takes because of imprecise movement (all those take 3 and 4's instead of 1 or 2's), lousy adjustments, breaking down in foul conditions, etc. I'd say by then if you're still on a cheap tripod, you've lost way more than 5 thousand dollars as well as a bit of sanity.
