What flash do you recommend for the D7100 for photos? I still have Nikon SB-600. I also saw people using the SB-400. I bought the SB-600 many years ago, so I am wondering if anything better has come out.
Something easy to use but also for professional jobs to get the light out there for long distance.
are our options mostly Nikon, or do you recommend any cheaper different brand flashes.
Thank you for your recommendation.

I have used them all except for the SB-400. The latest and greatest are the SB-910 and SB-700. My personal kit is 1x SB-900 and 2x SB-800's, and an SU-800 controller.. I use CLS a lot combined with Radio Poppers. I like the modern interface of the SB-900's but I prefer the size of the SB-800's (discontinued) - and please don't be mistaken, the SB-800's are very powerful.

If you don't care about ttl you can use any brand - I use a Metz on the camera and a quantum q flash for 'reach '

I personally think the SB-600 is just great if it's something simple to pop on top of the camera. Admittedly, its user interface feels pretty dated compared to the newer flashes, but if you're not doing a lot of tinkering, the actual flash unit itself is pretty useful and the TTL metering system yields great results.
