I have a number of manual nikon lenses that I would like to use on a 5dmkii I'm about to purchase.

Can anyone give me a quick rundown on advantages and disadvantages of the various adaptors.
Are the more expensive ones really worth it?

Thanks much,

I use several F to EF adapters from different makers, and the main thing is quality control issues. The "generic" ones that does not carry a decent brand are in my experience, have poor fit and would jiggle or give a wobble especially when you shift focus or adjust aperture, or just merely holding the lens. The better brands tend to fit snuggly giving you a better image in the end.

You don't have to go very expensive as these adapters have no electronics and no optics, just go for a decent brand, they are machined better and quality control is consistent.

I have used non-brand ebay adapters, branded ebay adapters, and fotodiox non-pro adapters.

The ones I like best are the ones sold by szkacha on ebay. They fit a lot tighter than the non-pro fotodiox (some of which wiggle quite a bit). BUT the szkacha Nikon-to-EOS adapter feels like the safety pin could break at any time and the adapter would be stuck on the lens. I think it's a common issue for this kind of adapter, so I'd say: go for Fotodiox or something like that (and get the pro version if the price doesn't scare you off)

I have a regular Fotodiox Nikon to EF Adapter, and a Pro Fotodiox Nikon to EF Adapter. Both work well, and to be honest there is only an infinitesimal difference between the two (there is maybe a little less play in the pro version - but both have almost zero play in reality). I would recommend the non pro Fotodiox adapter.

However you should note the following; you attach the adapter to the camera, and then attach the lens. When you remove the lens the adapter comes off (its now attached directly to the lens, not the camera). Removing the adapter from the lens is possible, but not quick or easy. So I would recommend you get 1 adapter for each lens - it makes life a lot easier.

I have also spent the cash to get one adapter (and back lens cap) for each lens, but I haven't spent more than $30 on any single adapter. I can live with their issues, but some have more play than many pros would tolerate (the lens twists a degree or two on the mount, and with my non-pro fotodiox this happens easily enough that a lens with a moderately hard focus ring will have the lens rotate first, then the focus ring).

I have a lot of Nikon lenses, all with their own adapters.

I have various versions of the fotoidox non pros, and a ton of ebay ones. I have used the fotoidox pro before and did like them, but don't think they're worth 5X the amount of the others.

The cheap ebay ones have honestly been great for me. The quality of them has improved greatly over the past year or two in my experience and they have little to no play.

a good tip if your adapter does have play is to look at the adapter mount and you will see there is a little gap between the cuts of the adapter.

If you wedge a screw driver or knife blade(be careful!) in there to widen the gap a little bit, the grip of the adapter to the lens gets a lot tighter.

Just be careful and go slow/small with the widening, if you widen it too much it can get stuck on the lens.

I hope that makes sense, I saw a video of it one time and will try to find it and repost it here.

Also as everyone has stated, it's really cheap and absolutely worth it to get an adapter for each lens and a canon rear cap for each as well

I've seen that lateral slot and I didn't know what it was for. Great to know, thanks.

I really wish I could find that video, I need to keep looking.

It's fixed a few of my adapters, it works very well.

Just go slow and small on the adjustments so you don't make the gap too big and have the adatper stuck on the lens
