Our Canon entry level CAC lens has a focus issue when zoomed in or extended. Canon basically told us "that's what you get for a lens that price" Great good to know.
I'm heading to the Arctic with the 500 and chances of telephoto are great. It would be a shame to have a lens mess it up.
I can rent...
Fujinon
HA 20x7.8
HA 20x7.5
at a really good rate.
They are not CAC but will they do well on the 500.
If curious, our Canon lens, when zoomed will have a circle around the centre in focus and then focus will drift towards the edges. It's almost like a centered radial blur. It's noticable when there is a flat area of high detail behind a foreground element. For instance a bear with a forest behind it.
We couldn't tell if it was a camera or lens issue. Senior engineers from both companies looked at our camera and it came back that it was our cheap glass.
