Recommendations on cheap DV cams?

Hi All,

I am in the process of shooting a doc on a 100a at 24p advanced in 16:9. However, I would like to get my primary subject a cheap DV cam that is good quality and easy to use (she's camera illiterate). Basically something she can set up on sticks at any time and share her latest thoughts. Criteria are:

- easy to use; just point and shoot
- clean audio from cam mic (I know, this is an oxymoron)
- Autofocus that is solid - doesn't constantly seek by popping in an out of focus
- Good in low light - low lux rated cam

30fps is fine. 16:9 would be a nice bonus but 4:3 is fine. I'm thinking having her shoot her personal stuff in 4:3 could add an interesting contrast to the 16:9 24p stuff I'm shooting. Or mabye the two will look terrible next to each other. Who knows.

In any case, I'd appreciate opinions. I'd like to stay under $1000 (ideally around $600).

Thanks,
Donny

Re: Recommendations on cheap DV cams?

I used the Canon Elura 2M and got some pretty good shots in low light. There is a lot of control at your fingertips with this camera and it's about the size of a large DVCAM tape...easily slip it inot your pocket. This model has been replaced now but you can still pick it up and get a good deal in the process.

Re: Recommendations on cheap DV cams?

For 1.78:1 recording try searching out for trv70 i haven't looked into it but rumors are that it uses the same "mega pixel" chip to capture widescreen as does the pdx10. Should run you around 700 bucks.
Good luck.

Re: Recommendations on cheap DV cams?

Hey All,

Thanks for the recommendations. I ended up going with the Sony TRV70. Found a demo model at B&H for $700. I'll let you know how it works!
