Recommendations for a FREE FTP Client?

And no, not Smart FTP. I have used that one, and it's a pain in the arse because, though non-profits are allowed to use it for free, it works on a "free trial period" that keeps expiring, and the only way to unlock it again is to go through the whole process of downloading the software... again.

I use Transmit at home in my edit suite for client files, but at my day job, I have no budget left for software for the year, and no more patience with Smart FTP.

And I need to get a website update posted today if at all possible.

Oh, and this has to be Windows XP-compatible. Our LAN doesn't play nice with Mac, and we still have DSL for our Internet connection with no wireless (otherwise I'd use my MacBook with Cyberduck to upload here).

I seem to remember trying FileZilla and didn't like it... and it caused security issues if I'm not mistaken.

Is CoffeeCup any good?

Thanks in advance,
Alex

personally i just use the command line, so i can't speak from experience on this one, but you might want to give FireFTP a try. it's a plugin for firefox.

SmartFTP is no longer free, even for non-commercial use. I use Filezilla at work and have had zero issues. I seriously doubt it would be a security risk, since it's open source software.

Try WinSCP at http://winscp.net/eng/index.php

It will do S-FTP (which is really what you want, anyway...unless you like plain-text logins and passwords being sent over the net for anyone to capture :) )

Even better, if your site is set up for it, it will do SCP and make your remote site look like just another drive. (Dragging and dropping, etc.)

So I tried CoffeeCup. It kept crashing on me. Not ruling out the possibility that my 5-year-old homemade hack job they call a PC is not up to the task. Long story for another time as to why my office has such POS computers.

The FireFTP plug-in worked, and without problem.

Thanks, folks!

I use Fetch on my Mac, been rocking the trial version no problem for over a year now. No re-installs needed so far.
