Recommendation for microphone for HVX200

Hi, I have recently purchased a HVX 200 and I am trying to find a good quality microphone. I have been reading threads and postings on microphones but I am still not sure what are the models that I should look into.

I am also pretty tight on budget(<300) but it needs to be a good quality. What do you recommend in the price range considering the quality, and what websites do you think I should get from?

I need to get this within 10 days so I am in a hurry.... hoping to get some answers here...

I have an Audio Technica AT-897, It is a good quality mic, but way too long for the camera (battery compartment is taking a lot of space for nothing)

What are the ones you are actually thinking of right now ?

Keep in mind that your next camera may have a wider lens which will put a long mic in the frame at the wide end! The Audio-Technica AT4073A Shotgun Mic I bought for my HVX200 looks really swell as an unpaid extra in every wide shot with the HPX170, when it's sporting a blimp...

This requires, obviously, a mount to get it up and out of the frame or preferably, a mic that suits the camera better. So I am shopping as well- suggestions for an HPX170 mic, anyone?

I use the RODE NTG-1 on my HPX 170. I can sit it right back in the cradle and have no troubles with it being in shot. I've used the mic in all sorts of conditions and for the price I'm very impressed with it. It runs off phantom power but I believe the NTG-2 can take batteries. I got mine for around $250 Australian dollars from memory - could be wrong but its around that price.

Specs on the RODE NTG-1 show it at 217mm long. My AT4073A measures 230mm. The problem isn't the mic itself as much as the wind protection devices which add length and girth. As a reference the mic Panasonic makes and suggests is a stubby little item- maybe too stubby... anyone used one? It would seem a nice size to keep an HPX170 compact if it works well enough at the shorter length to still provide good directional coverage. Or, more likely there's a better third party option that is shorter than a standard pro length shotgun mic... ???

i just got an ntg-3 , which i upgraded from my mx-100 or something, i think it was an old dvx100 mic, and this thing kicks serious ass! big ups on ntg3

So we are back to Mic mounts ;)
It is true that the original mic mount is too low to use with a Rycote, I only use it with the standard foam for indoors. As soon as I'm going out, here comes the mounted suspension (and actually a side bar to mount it on the side, leaving the handle free for my hand in low shots.

Now, back to the mic, fist I think we should discuss about the differences between each mic that is available and what ideal specs we are looking for in a mic. (yes the first spec is a short mic we got that!)

I have a ntg-1 on my 170 and it works great for the money. I got it at a place online called Jacksmusic factory, was super cheap and they make a perfect cable. Picked up the site from hv20.com

You can always buy a hotshoe mic mount if you need your mic to wear a fur coat.

Take a look and listen to this and you will have your answer. The best value in an on-camera mic that also doubles as a great boom mic is the AudioTechnica AT875r. It retails for less than $200.00, sounds better than most mics in the $300.00 to $800.00 range, is small and light and short and was specifically designed as an on-camera mic.

Enjoy!
