I'm in the process of learning so I can produce my very first short film.
I need to watch a lot of short films to study them.

Could you recommend me good shorts?

I'd have to disagree with The Raven. It has great production quality but is a bit of an infomercial for action sequences shot on RED. Not trying to spark a debate, just my two cents.

Anyhow, this is a solid little short from Ireland and, if you ask me, a great example of working within the narrative limitations of a short.

I still haven't figured out where this one came from, and some might even argue it is not long enough to constitue as a short film. But nonetheless, it is a clever and well executed idea.

This is from Norway. You just have to watch it.

Note the simplicity of these three films and their lack of dialogue.

If your interested, I've been posting varies shorts as I happen across them to my Google+ profile. The name is Jacob Hamby.

I'd sugest picking up "Cinema 16" short film DVD series. Think there's 3 or 4 of them, Europe, British, US and world all showcasing different legnth shorts from a range of different years and mediums. Good to see a bunch of **** that hasn't been made on a DSLR...

Also Sundance have put out a few DVDs in recent years with the festivals best shorts.

I was a 1st AC for Craig Wrobleski, CSC on a country music video a couple of months ago. He is a super nice guy and he showed me some of his past work. He sent me this video he had shot in Calgary, Canada, and it blew me away. I usually don't like voice over narration, but the writing is excellent, the narrator's voice is spot on perfect for the role, and Craig's photography is the finishing touch. He loves to use flashlights, and small broken pieces of glass to get really cool optical effects in camera. Funny guy... he actually operates hand-held, and with the other hand, spikes the lens with the objects or lights.... it's quite a talent to do it all at once.

Ryan, i'm curious what blew you away about that video?

I dunno. It spoke to me in some way. Not just the nice flares... but I really liked it. Maybe it's because I could relate to the message a bit, or maybe it's because I knew how it was made. Who knows. It's not an academy award winning short, that's for sure.... but something about it spoke to me. That's the magic, I suppose.

What did you think?

Would be good to know what film genre youre aiming for with your short cause dramas and love story or comedy look different.A lot of shorts are made just for the sake of being made and theres no proper mood because of lighting and lack of knowledge by DP or assumption that creating mood isnt important.
*That June short looked great, awesome lighting and mood.I wish more stuff looked like that.
