recommend Mac software

Was just reading about DV Rack (PC only), and someone mentioned another interesting piece of software call Scenalyzer (PC only).

Could the Mac OS X users here recommend some little-known but useful software add-ons -- whatever they're for?

Re: recommend Mac software

This is totally not what you're asking for, but considering how incredibly cool DV Rack is, and Vegas, and how others enjoy Scenalyzer... and considering how dirt-cheap PC's are... you may at some point find it useful to pick up one of those $350 PC's at Fry's just to run the specific pieces of software you're looking for.

It sounds absurd, but nowadays the computer can be less expensive than the software you're wanting to run! I bought a laptop just to run DV Rack and my teleprompter... it was $699, which is still a lot of money, but I figured that the computer plus the DV Rack software gives me (among other things) a digital disk recorder solution, for LESS than a dedicated digital disk recorder (Firestore FS-4 Pro) so, combined, it became reasonable (especially considering it can drive the teleprompter too)... (and I can use it as a network-rendering PC in Vegas, which cuts my render times by 1/3)...

Like I say, I know it's not what you were asking, but maybe it'll make sense for some...

Re: recommend Mac software

The thought has crossed my mind, but I figure there must also be one or two sw gems for Mac that I dont know about, especially since the Mac has always been popular for creative work.

Re: recommend Mac software

Well, to answer my own question, it seems the "Made4Mac" section of the Apple website is probably best for seeing what's out there. For ex, this:

http://www.imagineproducts.com/

has a product similar to Scenalyzer, tho it also has some functions that seem redundant with FCP. (Demo available)

Barry that is exactly my train of tought . . . . its soon gonna be like . . . Hello with buy windows XP 2005 today and get a free colour coordinated pc to go with it ;D

Re: recommend Mac software

I know there are zillions of PCs for every Mac in the world, so there's more PC software being developed. I just thought a few of us might have used particularly clever Mac software and could recommend some of it.

What are the specs on your laptop, Barry? I've been considering the same, but I was planning to use it for some heavy lifting, too. Was looking more in the $1500 range.

The specs were "what's the cheapest laptop I can find during this Labor Day Weekend sale?" ;D

The answer? $699 for a Toshiba A65.

It's just a Celeron 2.53ghz, 256mb RAM, 30gb HD, 15" screen, DVD/CD-RW, and 100-mbit Ethernet. Pretty much bottom of the ladder for what's available nowadays, but I had two main goals for it: run DV Rack, and run the teleprompter. It's got an s-video output jack for the mini-teleprompter, and a VGA output for driving an external monitor for the big teleprompters. And its built-in screen size of 1024x768 is ideal for DV Rack. I added a 3-port firewire card to it and it's 100% functional and dirt cheap. And with the 100-mbit network port, it connects to the desktop as a Vegas network-render station.

So, nothing special, nothing fancy, just something cheap that does the job at hand...
